The July '05 (just got it yesterday...) Motorcycle Consumer News has a nice two page spread on the Burgmann 650 vs. Ford Expedition as a commuting vehicle. The tester was an accountant for Bowtie, the parent company of MCN, and he ended up buying a Burg 650 for himself. :)

Since you guys represent the Burgman, I'll speak up fot the Expedition crowd, and say WTF? Talk about your apples and oranges comparison. Did they tow any boats to the lake?, or any horses to and from shows? Sure it got 4x's the MPG, but did they mention toting 8 passengers in comfort.

pssstt I'm only bitter that I have too much negative equity that I can't get rid of my Expedition w/out taking it in the financial rear ;-)

If you're going to tow a boat, or haul 8 people - go with the big *** SUV. I see so many SUVs on my daily commute, and these are single passenger vehicles towing nothing. These people commuting to work by themselves in gas sucking SUVs are wasting their own time and money in larege amounts.

The comparison was buying a Burgman 650 as an additional vehicle and saving money.

Sure, keep the gas guzzler to haul people, tow boats and horses. (most SUV owners have no boat or horse...) The whole article was pointing out how much time and money you can save in the author's situation. His highway time is down over an hour a day, since bikes can use the HOV lanes in LA and other cities.

I would think that would favor almost ANY bike.
There are a lot of bikes that get crappy gas mileage (under 35 mpg) and have to burn premium fuel (H-D). I'm rather fond of my C50 with 45 - 50 mpg on regular, but I wish I had the excellent cargo carrying capability of the Burgman. I have no plans for a next bike, but the Burgman is certainly an excellent choice. I just like to ride a practical bike, I'm not really into the Halloween dress up biker pseudo-culture.

It seems I'm going to have to put forth my dos centavos on the SUV thing. I like to use a vehicle for its intended purpose. Sure you can commute to work, get groceries, tow your bike, and take the kids to the soccer game with one. Guess what, you can do the same thing on other vehicles that burn less fuel. And for those who drop their SUV's and put spinners on their rims, OMG that's hideous! Were they not originally designed to navigate rough off-road terrain or am I wrong? C'mon, you can tell the Captain!

A Burgman looks like it can be a good grocery-getter on two wheels. I also like practical bikes and I certainly do not want to look like a S&M freak while I'm riding, or rather posing with, one.
