C 50 Valve Clearance Inspections

I recently purchased a C 50. The owner’s manual maintenance schedule suggests checking the valve clearances at 600 miles or 2 months. On most bikes, that is a big job – and expensive if you have the dealer do it. Is it necessary to pull the valve covers or can I make a rough guess by the sound and feel of the engine? Some folks say it is really important to check valve clearance at 600 miles; others say let the engine feel and sound be your guide and it is better to do it after 1500 miles. Any suggestions?

Thanks

That question is asked over and over. You will most likely get opinions from both sides Do it,, or don't do it (at 600 miles). It is my understanding that the C50 (which I also ride) has a self adjusting cam chain. It works on some sort of ratchet principle. Again,, "it is my understanding" that the constant light ticking we hear is the little self adjusting tab that rides on some sort of sprocket deal. At such time when the chain has enough slack in it, the self adjuster clicks into the next slot. If anyone out there can verify this,, feel free to jump in.

At my C50's 600 mile break in service, the mechanic found two exhaust valves were tight and required adjustment. That's pretty common for any bike in it's break in. The only valves that do not require adjustments are on bikes with hydraulic lifters - like the C90. The automatic tensioner on the cam chain does not adjust the valves. The C50 valve adjust is not a big job, taking off the tank gives ready access. My dealer charged $50 for the entire 600 mile maintenance - probably the most important maintenance you do to a bike. I'll do most stuff myself, but a new C50 is a good sized investment, a proper breakin maintenance is money well spent.

Over 2500 miles later, the biks is awesome. 8)

Good advice Kentucky..you'll see on my threads the dilemmas I'm facing.. the mechanic seems to be afraid that a clearance will cost too much when the first service is done.........its like telling someone not to worry about they're chest pains as most of the time it will go away...........
