Hi , I am a newbie also, I pick up my Black/Grey C50 tommorrow. From what I have been able to gather in this forum and others the C50 does indeed benifit from a exhaust mod , most popular is the Vance and Hines Straight shot and also a set up made by Cruzers. However, this generaly requires a Power module attached to the Fi computer other wise the free flowing exhaust tends to lean out the motor and you basicily have cancelled any performance. But they still will sound way cool!.

PS

I have been chastized ( good naturedly i think) for not using the search feature on this forum. It does work. Do a search on vance & hines, cruzers, Straight shots and or power module. It should get you the scoop on what you are looking for.

Welcome and good luck with your excellent choice

If you get pipes, you must get either a programmer or the Cobra Fi2000 to adjust the air fuel ratio. The pipes will give you more sound and power (louder is better). The factory sets these bikes really lean , so when you add anything performance wise, even a K&N filter, you need to address the air fuel ratio problem. The Cobra is cheaper, and from what I hear, alot easier to use. I have bought the Vance & Hines Cruzers pipes, the Cobra unit, and a hypercharger. I have not received/installed yet, but will let you know how it goes.

I read a quote a couple of weeks ago, and wonder how changing the pipes can affect the mixture. Is this a conspiracy to sell more FI/Carb kits?

During the exhaust stroke, a free flowing exhaust allow the engine to push the exhaust out with less effort compared to a restrictive exhaust. During the intake stroke, when the engine draws in the air/fuel mixture, the exhaust valve is closed. Whether there is no exhaust or a 30 foot long exhaust pipe with a banana in it won't matter during intake, where the fuel is mixed with air. Please correct me if I'm way off.

My 2 cents  My under standing is, because there is less restriction on the exhaust stroke the FI computer senses this lighter work load on the motor and compenstes by leaning out the mixture a bit. So the gain in power expected is not quite acheived. That is why a after market power module is required if you want the added performance. Just my 2 c

Vance and Hines Straight Shots have been on for over 2700 miles with no issues.

I'm seeing that most c50's are running rich from the factory... put the pipes on and see how it works if it seems lean you could add an aftermarket programmer. The only one that looks worth anything is the DynoJet Power commander.

Remember our EFI bikes are pretty smart and can figure out most of what we do to our bikes. Granted you will get better gains with the aftermarket ecu piggy backs, but if you are like me and only wanted your c50 to sound good then you can get away without wasting the cash on the ecu.... it isn't like you are putting a damn blower on this thing... it is a lame set of pipes for crying out loud... it will most likely be fine.

Good luck, Ralph
