in fixing up and chopping up my bike i've wondered if i should convert my savage to chain.

the one pro to me is that a broken chain can be fixed on the side of the road. i put my trust in steel. broken belt? too bad.

other people who have belt drives seem to swear up and down that chain is bad and dirty(as if that matters to me).

since alot of you folks are sport bike riders and have chains what are your opinions on it?

Chain = more maintenance. Belts seem to work with the cruiser bikes better. As long as your belt is in good shape, I wouldn't sweat it too much. If there are questions, then have it replaced before your trips. That would be easier than a full-out chain conversion, cheaper too.

We flog the heck outta our snowmobile belts, and they are quite reliable. I think it'd be a mistake to convert.

I would stay with belt. More reliable. Most are steel belted like your tires anyway.

Cleaner, less maint., and, I think, belt looks better.

belt = clean, quiet, pullies last forever. Belts don't last as long, though, and they're genrally more expensive. Not great for high torque engines, though, because they have a tendency to slip and stretch...biggest problem with the XB9R.

Chain = requires oil so it's messy, and pullies and sprockets must be changed simultaneously..but they last much longer with propper lube. Much better for delivering power to the ground...no slipping...and chain and sprocket assemblies can be found for fairly cheap. Quite noisy, though....
