Since I got my bike, I have been wanting to make two changes in the name of safety and protection. Frame sliders and replace the stock exhaust with an after market pipe...

Got both done this weekend....

My question is,
going from the stock to a straight pipe increase the HP?
The bike seems faster but only after 5000rpm. Before that it seems about the same....on a GSX-R600 what kind of hp increases can be expected if any.

The main reason I changed it was to make it louder. Last week I was riding next to my wife's car and she couldn't hear me at all. Different story now. I people in cars know that I am there.

Depends on what kind of exhaust system you went with. If just a slip on then you increased noise and maybe 1 or 2 hp. Full system with re-map for your FI then you could see up to 10-15 hp.

M4 Exhaust -

This is exhaust that I got. I was not interested in additional power, I was going for more noise, making sure that other drivers can hear me..... it worked great. It's much louder. Before I was next to car and in most cases, unless I gave it some gas, they wouldn't even know I was there. Now, they always look. So I am assuming they can hear me.

I got the pipe for a good price, end of session special,

List price was US$465 and I got it for US$252.00

If you want more power, you should buy a complete exhaust system, then the increased power will be 7/10 Hp at around 14.000 rpm, depending on the system you purchase. Of course you will need a power commander and (my advise) a race air filter.
I've got an Akrapovic bolt on and I don't expect more than 1hp increase, nothing I can be aware of while riding :)
I'm talking about open products, the street legal ones are identical to the stock ones (talking about horse power).
Btw, do you have problems with the cops if you have a race exhaust? Here in Italy you risk to have your bike confiscated

Generally we don't have too many problems with police about race exhausts. Some states can be worse than others. If they actually came after us they would have to get the Hardley guys also since they are much louder but I doubt that that would ever happen here, wouldn't be politically correct.

Over here, the Harleys are mostly harmless ... if you want ear-splitting noise, ride near anyone with a Ducati or a Buell.

I personally find loud exhausts to be quite irritating. I kept mine stock, and I think that's just fine. I've got enough horsepower, and I definitely don't want to attract any more attention than I have to. I ride mostly in a rural area of a neighboring county (up and down the Mississippi River bluffs!), and if those folks decide you're a nuisance, they just might scatter some gravel in a blind curve or something.

No, thanks . . . I'll just sneak by with my stock exhaust.
