Ok , the weather here has gotten cold finally. 40-50degrees in morning and same at night. I wear my jeans or slacks(NO AIR penetrates these opposed to denim) , a windbreaker with cotton lining and my gloves,of which i need cause i never noticed the breather holes on finger tips BRRRR. The only thing that gets cold when i drive if my cheeks ,chin and neck.I have a racing jacket but i dont like because when zipped all the way up it digs into my throat and limits my head movement side to side.

Does anyone here know of anything i can wear on my head under helmet? I cant find anything other than a ski mask and they are too thick.

I have a "ski-mask" (Sturmhaube) that was designed to be worn under a helmet. I picked it up for a few dollars in the "motorcycle" section of a local hardware store.

I've got a friend who always wears a bandana when we ride and recently where it's getting colder he ties the bandana round his neck. He says it works.

Hahah, I glanced and thought those pics were of Jack Daniels to stay warm.

Anyways, I wear a shirt with a high neck or even a turtle neck to help keep cold air out. If your neck is covered well, it can help prevent more cold air entering your helmet. (At least that how it seems to me).

Plain 'ole gaiter/gator! These things are great :bluethum: . You can pull 'em, flip 'em, flop 'em then rub 'em...I mean roll 'em down around your neck & they're perfect    .

This may help...

Hey Badkitty, everyone,

I just caught this topic and since someone is about aminute away from picking me up for dinner I neither read it thoroughly or looked for what I am about to offer online.

Anyway...I am afirefighter here in NYC and I just took the MSF BRC last week. It was pretty frigid so I decided to bring one of my extra fire duty hoods to wear. It worked like a charm! The hood covers your entire neck back and front, and it goes over your head. You can wear it so that it covers your mouth or you can keep it under your chin.

My ride is here so I have to go! If you want to do a google search, use terms like 'nomex hood' 'firefighting hood', etc.

I hope that helped someone.

Joe

Check your local motorcycle shops or mail order. (Dennis Kirk) They make speciality masks that are very thin, but work very well. I can't think of the name at this time, but it has one hole for your eyes, and nose. They fit under the helmet very nicely. I use mine all the time. Watch the cold payvement. It can be slick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Humm I'm making a flap to hang from the velco in the chin of my helmet. Even with a turtle neck and seperate fleece pull over on under my jacket my chin is exposed to the wind. So I thought a small scarf or dickie type thing was made to cover the chin and throat from the wind but haven't been able to find one so I'm making one of my own.

Turtle Fur makes what you are after, but their website sucks. I got mine through Cycle Gear. Shoei also makes an insert for the under side of the helmet. It presses in place and stops the air flow from going up around your chin and jaw from underrneath. Also from Cycle Gear. Both work great even down to Zero degrees! Don't ask, it was f*&%ing cold!

A balaclava works great really. I got mine at REI for $19 (which was too much). Any of the nylon ones are warm enough and thin enough for riding. I saw them at the motorcycle show here this past weekend for $10 and they pop up on eBay for $7 or so all the time.

The only problem I have with mine is the kids steal it and play with it, they call it a Ninja Mask ;)

Good call on the throat. Most folks overlook the fact that our heads are basically heat exchangers. The skin is full of capillarys (sp? too lazy to look it up) that are close to the surface. This allows the blood to absorb/lose heat as the laws of thermodynamics see fit. Covering up that chin will make a world of difference.
