So you want to live in California?
You want to enjoy the moto life out here?
Well you have to pay your dues!
Some of us do it everyday.
This is a great video that shows what it's like for us California Bike Commuters. Good view of what it's like to lane share, split, whatever you like to call it. I actually enjoy it, just because it's a challenge, but them I'm crazy anyhow.

Thats a bit too much for me thank you....
It's just the average bikers commute around here. In fact the video is rather mellow compared to some days here! I average having to deal with at least 4 or more idiots each day.

They try block you. They change lanes on top of you, even when you are occupying the other lane. They speed up and try to squeeze you.The list goes on.

It's like living a video game, except when you lose this game it can really hurt. But it gets the adrenalin going and can make for an exciting commute. Sure is better than than being in a cage, waiting in line like cattle.

I only do the Super Slab lane sharing on the way to work. The ride home is all twities in the mountains! :bluethum:

Dale, I just spent 4 days out in Thousand Oaks a week ago. Now, while in the Marines, I was stationed in SD from 94-97, and had forgotten how crazy people drove out there. I saw folks "whitelining" at 50 and 60 MPH. That is nuts!

I told the wife that I wanted to retire in SD, and she said, "That's fine, but I am going home!" (Baltimore). So here I am!

Enjoy your rants!

Starts at the Benecia toll bridge on I-80 heading north. Looks like rush hour heading out of Oakland/SF. Ends up at the I-80/680 interchange (that was about 5 miles south of where I lived the past four years).

Oh yeah, I did that commute a LOT. It took about two seconds of video and I knew EXACTLY where that was! The 1100 was fun maneuvering through that crap.

Hey Joe!

What happened to Compromise? You could winter out here!

I agree the squids get nuts with lane sharing. Sometimes I find my self caught up in it at some fast speeds too. It creeps up on you as the flow gradually increases.

The hard part is riding to another state, getting caught in traffic, and remembering it's only legal in California! My bike doesn't play well below 35 mph!

My buddy and I were headed into Oxnard via 101 and nailed the 5pm stopngo. We did the splitting and came across about 5 hostile drivers that tried closing the gap on us. One almost hit my buddy's rear tire, I was far enough behind to adjust my course to come up his driver side (oh yeah! he was over that far in his lane due to his malicious intent) and looked inside... he didn't even see me come up on him! Well, I blasted him with the D&D and got while the gettin' was good. We are VERY careful on the freeways due to people driving on autopilot, being distracted, or just plain stupid.

For the most part, drivers are pretty considerate to bikers in heavy stopngo.

BTW: that camera wouldn't last a minute on my route to work. Too mant fields and bugs!

Its a gray law. Unwritten, but enforcable by other means if you're being stupid about it.

Definition of 'being stupid about it': Riding up a driver's left side to blast him with a really loud exhaust can.

That video did seem pretty "every day" if not a little more mellow. At the end with the big rig on one side and cars on the other... now that's an every day occurrence(and the funnest).

Unfortunately, it caught up with me today. What I always have feared has happened. I nicked someones mirror with mine. Damn! So I pulled her over and gave her 100 and that was that. I was going to buy some clip-ons. *sigh*.

Just today I was in a little stop and go traffic and the guy behind me decided to 'lane share' and I'm in WA where its not legal (yet). I just looked at the guy like WTF!? There's a bunch of ex-Californian's here and the sun was out, maybe he forgot where he was?

Its like that here in some places, but looks weird filtering on the left instead of the right!

Even if splitting/sharing were legal here in WA, I don't think I'd do it. I trust my skill in riding between lanes, but I do NOT trust other drivers. Far too many distractions.

If you do it for a long time you tend to get tunnel vision and lose concentration a bit, better to sit at the same speed as the traffic now and again to give your head a break, its better than breaking your head.

The "IG Motorrad", a lobby for motorcycle owners in Switzerland has started a petition to allow bikes to do lane-splitting when traffic on the Autobahn has come to a complete stop. I don't think that it'll be successful, but I signed it anyway ...
