I'm relatively new to motorcycling, just joined this forum and have previously only ridden a Katana 600. I got my license via the MVA safety course and am looking for a bike that I would keep for the longterm, and that is somewhere between a sportbike and a cruiser.

I've narrowed my wish to three bikes...Suzuki SV1000S ($8,600), Yamaha V-Max($11,000), and the Aprilia Tuono ($10,500) but am currently leaning toward the SV1000S. (I realize Aprilia has only 4 dealers within 150 miles of my house, and maintenance costs would be excessive, but it's hard not to like this bike.)

I've read through most of the articles in this forum and liked the honest commentary most people give. As such, I wanted to get some of your opinions on the SV1000S, and to find out if the rumors on "clutch" or "valve" noise I've read are true on this model.

THANKS ( I will keep any future postings much shorter)

I've got the SV650S and I love it! Everything I've read about the SV1000 says that it's an under-appreciated bike...great bike for the money, but for some reason over looked by a lot of people.

Take one for a test ride, see what you think! The only thing is that if you're looking for something that is "between a sportbike and crusier"...the SV1000S is probably not your best option.

The position on the bike is very "sportbike". You might want to look into a 1200 Bandit. The position is more upright than the SV, but it's got a TON of power and handles like a sport bike. The bandit also has faired and non-faired models just like the SV.

The 1000 is a great bike! Don't let the BS reports fool you. A well designed machine that has some real nice torque, and handles relatively well.

Dale Walker giving the SV1000 a workout at the last Banditfest. Dale is working on some aftermarket parts for the SV1000.

The SV1000, huh? Motorcyclist called it "arguably the best undercover sportbike by any manufacturer." I would have to agree with that and Zukigirl1's post. My best friend has the 650 and LOVES it. How long have you been riding that katana 600? The sv1000 has a lot more power and torque.

sv1000

this bike is awsome and very economical. price is very good considering the features.(fuel injection). shop well and you could find a left over(2003) model and save big $. (from $6300. and up)......good luck, Bob

hate to say it

Listen to the crowd! I rode a SV1000S when I had my 900RR and I have to say it impressed me. Even though my 900RR would leave it sitting in any gear, the SV handled so well and had plenty of power in almost every range possible. It wasn't as quirky coming out of the turns as one would expect a liter bike to be. The GSX-R has a tendancy to stand up when power is applied exiting turns as well as the 750, but the SV doesn't have that issue as often. It is a torque monster which can make it a bit on the wheelie prone side until you figure out how to keep in the throttle and stay on the ground. I'd love the chance to take one to the track and see how it handles technical curves compared to my 750. I have heard only one complaint about the SVs, some take too many mods to get the desired power output within a specific range, but this is mostly from racers and curve junkies. Very much worth the money!!! Post pics if you get it.
