After giving my bike the once over the other day I noticed that among the other damage it incured from it's previous owner that there was a dent at the very top of the forks. It doesn't seem to effect the travel at all, but I was wondering if this might need to be investigated by a mechanic, since I certainly do not qualify as that? Pic is below.

Also curious if anyone knows of any big-time safety issues of running without a front fender? Mine was removed by the preveious owner and after checking prices and my check book, it may be a while before I can replace it.

Not sure about the dent. Was the bike damaged? Did you ask the previous owner?

As for the fender, you'll be sending crud, gravel towards your bike and yourself. Ask the owner again if he has the fender.

My two cents.

Crud etc. is tossed from the tire at a tangent. The red lines in the below drawing. The minimal cruiser fender protects only the green area and at best stops crud being tossed up into the air in front of you.

If you want more than token protection you need to go with a full fender such as what Max did on his yellow Savage:

Merci guys, looks like a new fender may very well be in order. I've been looking at the OEM stuff from some online vendors and it seems to be priced anywhere from $400-$480. One site, DGY, had it for $72, but that seems incredibly cheap considering. On the other hand since when does a single fender total 9% of a bikes cost????

Oh and as to what happened to the original, well, the previous owner had a bit of a mishap in the driveway, leaving the fender, windshield, and headlight less than functionable. I believe he trashed the old fender, because it got pretty gnarled up in the incident.

That's not a dent ! It's made that way . Really !
That's what I was thinking also. Bikes are like dogs, if you find something on one leg . . . check the other leg for a match before you call the vet.

If the other leg doesn't have the same dent, take a look at the dent and try to figure out why it's there. "Dents" like that one look like channels intentionally machined into the bike for mechanical purposes.

Actually for some reason that indentation is there on the left fork only. Same on my Vol.

Damn now I'll have to find out why, couldn't leave well enough alone !

DOH!!!!!

It does look pretty damned smooth and symetrical. It is only on the right front fork. Ask a stupid question, and get a little peace of mind. A small price in humility. Thanks guys.

Yeah that looks more machined or pressed in there rather than a dent.
