Hi Everyone,

I am a total newbie to pulling apart motors etc... but I am trying...
I recently fitted a new carb to my postie bike...
seems to be running fine... I used it for a while and it was great.
now when I have the bike on the centre stand and start it and put it into gear it is fine..
If I have the bike on the ground and start it and put it into gear it stalls.
does anyone have any suggestions before I pull the clutch thingy apart....
Cheers and thank in advance

First make sure that you don't have too much slack in your clutch cable causing the clutch to drag.

Then.....does it also do that if you re-start it with the engine fully warmed up ?

Idle speed might be a bit slow too.

These have a centrifugal clutch yeah? I woud run some carb cleaner through, change fuel and where you buy it as sometimes the garage gets contaminated fuel ...esp when they fill the tanks....it stirs the crud up and the next user gets a good dose of it in their delivery of fuel. The clutch adjustment is easy on these. straight from wikipedia....

The clutch is adjusted with the engine off. Remove the cover protector (1) and loosen the adjuster lock nut (2). Turn the clutch adjuster (3) clockwise one turn; do not turn excessively. Slowly turn the adjuster counterclockwise until a slight resistance is felt.

Ps whereabouts in Oz are you?

Good luck

Hello...
Well, I adjusted the clutch as per Aussie Steve's instructions.
Then I thought I would clean the tank, so I took that off and cleaned the inside of it...
got all the water out - reattached it.
  • Adjusted my valves, did that a few times, think I have that right.
  • Pulled the carby off ( it is a newish one) made sure all the jets etc were clean.
put it all together and it doesn't start.
* If I chucked some "start ya bastard" in, it fires and starts for a second. but nothing after that.
checked the spark plug, which is new and it has spark, turned it over with out the lead connected, pulled it out and it's not wet.
I am thinking that I may have done something to the float in the Carby and possibly no fuel is getting into the motor?
there is fuel going to the carb.
or there is too much fuel?
I noticed when I leave the bike for a while and come and kick it, it starts for a second then dies....
Yep I am a newbie mechanic trying to be one and start a new hobby.......would love to know what everyone thinks.... Thanx

I would suggest the float is sticking and a tiny bit of fuel gets in then nothing. You may have put the pivot pin in wrong....it either has a single screw to trap it or a spindle that fits in a saddle affair. I would check this out as it sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Also make sure the tank hasnt let some crud through. Another thing may be a few drops of water in the float bowl. Since water is heavier than fuel it will collect around the main jet base and prevent fuel rising up the jet and into the air flow. Also another dose of carb cleaner may help. I have stated this many times but often the tiny idle jets and idle circuit are blocked and are very difficult to clear. Carb cleaner needs to be left to soak any hard blockages out so left overnight at least. Try these and post any results if you will.

Good luck

Will have another look at the float, have pulled the carby apart a few times and everything seems to be clear, the float is on a little hinge with the plunger just hanging off it, it seems a little flimsy to me, it’s a keinik (think that’s spelt right) carby, and it would only be about 18 months old. Will have look again. Thanks heaps Steve 😎👍

Thank you heaps Steve......
I actually just put a new Carby in, and wella, it started first kick....... runs better than ever.....
Now I have to go back and adjust the clutch, after Adjusting it... it still stalls....
I loosened the chain and when on the stand I can put it into gear all the way to fourth
but when the back tyre is on the ground and I put it into first it stalls straight away
What do you think? Should I do a new post?
