It's not the best choice for a beginner IMO (too heavy and a bit too powerful), but it isn't that intimidating compared to newer 600's. They're very reliable and not too bad to work on.

Very important: Buy good gear to go with it.

I really liked the old 750 Kat I had, just too bad I had to go and wreck it.

Get the gear... wear it.

Take the MSF... pass it.

Beyond that... good biking.

I sat on it today and probably get it very soon. The Suzuki Katana 600 Blue..

What do you guys think?
As long as it's got the S on it, it's a good bike. I prefer cruisers, but that's just me.
It does...On the tank or somewhere near that I think. I just feel the 500 wouldn't be enough for me. I know everyone will probably start flaming me for that. But I'm not buying a "Super" sport. I just wanted to ask what people what they think before I did the final purchase.

Also I WILL have gear and I WILL wear it don't worry :)

First let me say that I just bought my first bike, so my advise may not be worth much. I am partial to cruisers, but the pic you posted is sweet! I would go with whatever you are comfortable with. If you are worried that a bigger bike is too much, buy the smaller one. You can always sell it and upgrade.

Yeah just take it slow and easy till you find that friction zone, get the down shifting smoothly into corners and slow speed handeling in traffic. Otherwise have fun like I am!! Over 800 trouble free miles since Aug8th!!!!

I won't talk about gear since I'm fully equiped but just be safe.

I still need to take the MSF. Problem is the "only" way to get the deal on helmet, etc is to buy the bike when I buy the other gear.

Does anyone think I should get the SV650S instead of the Katana. Does everyone really drop their first bike, etc?

I never dropped my first bike. I have yet to drop my second. Hope to never drop any of them. But who knows what the future holds. So no, not everyone drops their first bike.

Well I don't think it's a rule that you have to drop any bike but statistically noobs are more prone to doing the drity deed. I think Over and Under confidence plays a huge part in doing this. Either you think you can do more then you or the bike is really capable of or your more scared and overy cautious of the bike where you don't need to be. I could see that under confidence in some people in my MSF class inspite of the fact that they passed.

I can only hope that they develop a better trust in thier personal bike then the user ones in class. I know my bike if far more capable of doing things then I'm willing to put her thru and day by day I'm catching up with her. And I hope never to drop my bike, but chit happens eh.

I go back to the smaller is better theory when starting out. But it really depends on what you think you can handle and which bike is more comfortable for you.

This is the rare instance when the more powerful bike is the one that weighs less.

Between the two, I'd go with the one that fits you best.

I haven't sat on the 650 yet, so we will see....

The Katana, I had sandles on so bad example but I could only touch with the ball of my foot while trying standing with both feet down.

Hopefully they have those in stock....

What do you guys think about the weight difference between the Katana 600 and the SV650S?

As being a newbie :)
Well whats your height, weight and do you exercise at all. Not that its important but if your bike starts to lean to almost falling over your leg and arm strength is the only thing that could stop it.

155 lbs @ 5'7" A lot of that is probably some weight I need to lose. I am fat in the stomach.

I have short legs, 30 inch pants are long, I think I found I "actually" wear a 28 inch. I just have a long torso.

I don't exercise but I'm pretty strong on the upper body..

dude, you just described me in every measurement. I happen to be 2 inches shorter and 30 lbs lighter (every other measurement lol). In any case, I went and tired a Katana "on" the other day, and for what it's worth... way to friggin heavy for me. Go sit on one at a dealer.

On the other hand, the SV felt more comfortable but I'm not into the "naked" thing.
