Does anyone know how to decode the "VIN" on the engine itself? I need to know what year it is. I know my frame is an 1986 but i think the engine may be newer (87-89). The "VIN" on the engine is not 17 characters like a normal VIN, its only approx 10. I am thinking it may be newer than a 1986 because i have an old LT250R manual that i sometimes double check things with when im working on the engine and it says that the pre-1987 models do not have the window to view the exhaust valve adjuster. I need to know for sure what year engine it is to order parts

The micro fiche will list the engine numbers. Hopefully you will have a knowledgable dealer that can look it up for you. Or if anyone has the fiche on this forum for that bike they could look up the numbers. There is a thread about decoding VIN @'s on this forum but it does not help with decoding the motor number. If worde comes to worse order the fiche, takes about a week to get it from www.repairmanual.net. Then go to the library and use the fiche reader.
