When pulling the engine on a GSXR 600, is it necessary to take the head off and pull the pistons if your only servicing the bottom crankcase. The shop manual says to but there seems to be no reason for all that extra work.

the main reason they say to pull the head off and remove the pistons and conecting rods is so that the reassembly is easier and done properly. If you are trying to replace bearings in the bottome end, the re installation of the crank is much easier with the pistons and rods out, there is a much less chance of scratching the crank.
