Hey everyone, this is my first post!

Anyway, I'm currently on the prowl for a used street bike, possibly a Bandit 400 or GS500E. I was interested in a couple, but a friend of mine said they have way too many kilometers on them.

So my question is, typically how long will a Bandit400/GS500 engine go before they will need to be overhauled? I understand that can be a rather varied amount and dependent to each machine.. I just would like to be able to immediately discount certain bikes with too much mileage. So any information would be greatly appreciated.

This will be my second bike, the last one I owned (FZR400) I sold about 3 years ago. So I would like to pickup something rather small, cheap to run and insure to get back into the groove for a year or two. (Though I am also considering a SV650 if I could manage the funds.. *Insert Dream*)

i bought my 83' GS550ES (looks awsome for its age) with 64,000 + km's, its now got 84,000 and only thing i have touched was brakes and chains. last week the stator went on it and had delayed my riding and can't affored to insure other bikes. I would think them newer bikes with even 20 or 30 thousand kms, if they were nicely maintained wouldn't be a problem at all. Even the older sport bikes are fun to drive and really cheap to run especially if a parts bike is found. As long as regular oil changes took place then it should be good to go. Would be good to find out common problems with the certain bikes you are looking at and see which is more reliable. But a suzuki is always reliable i found.

Haha man, I go on the internet to ask a question and wind up getting an answer by someone from the same town as myself!

What are the odds.. Anyway, that's amazing your bike has so many kilometers and has been such a great performer.. true testament to Suzuki's quality I guess! By the way, the "stator", is that part of the alternator?

You mentioned about the oil changes.. I definitely agree, and it's one thing for someone to say they did regular changes at 4000km or 3months..etc, but is it reasonable to expect some sort of receipt log to prove they were done?

Unfortunately I'll have moved back down to Souther Ontario when I finally pick up a bike, so we can't take our GS's out for a ride! :(
