I just wanted to share an experience I had at work on Sunday with everyone:

Sunday afternoon I was dispatched to a local motocross track on an injured rider. We were told that the rider was in full cardiac arrest, and when I got there it was true. We did everything that could be done for the rider and spent almost a full hour between our work in the ambulance and that in the hospital ER, but he finally sucame to his injuries. The rider was 29 years old and had a wife, I'm not sure if he had children.

The EMTs who were on standby at the track told me that he had been going slowly over some small bumps and hit one wrong and was thrown over his handlebars. He landed on his head and back and was in cardiac arrest by the time they got to him. He had been wearing full protective gear (Full face motocross-type helmet, full body armored riding suit, gloves, armored boots). When I looked at his helmet, it was still intact and had no visible damage. The helmet also had a sticker on the side that said "NOVICE" in block letters. Now I have no idea how novice he was, or what actually happened, but my best guess is that he got onto some terrain that was beyond his ability. No matter HOW the accident happened, it did, and it took his life!

Some friends of mine ask me how I can want to ride a motorcycle when I'm a paramedic and see people hurt really badly on them. We all understand that riding is dangerous, this is a level of danger that we accept everytime we get on. Wearing full protective gear should be a no-brainer! Unfortunately, sometimes its not enough.

Everyone be careful out there!! We all enjoy riding our bikes, and I just want everyone to come home safe so they can ride again!

Thanks for the reminder, Nate.

As for being a paramedic and riding a motorcycle, you can tell people that many doctors continue to smoke, even though they are confronted with lung cancer patients every day. And being a paramedic, you are well aware of the dangers of motorcycling, and most probably ride more within your safety envelope than some squid who has never thought about the risks.

Project Manager Wisdom: A risk that you have recognised can be dealt with - only a suprise can really ruin your day.

Sorry to hear. We have allot of off road trails and few off road tracks around here. People seem to think that just because they are on the trail in the woods that they will not get hurt. They seem to forget about how much longer it will take someone to help them when they are in the middle of the woods.

NEVER RIDE ALONE. About two years ago a young fella went out on his four wheeler and got suck in some slushy snow, his feet got wet and frost bitten. I beleave he lost one foot. The worst part of it was he could of crawled home he was not that far away.
He did not want to leave his four wheeler.

last night we had the first traffic death of the year in my county of EC, it is a corner that is 90 degrees... and sandy as hell, everyone has taken that corner, but me and alot of my friends try to go as fast as we can in cars not bikes, around the corner... but no one was stupid enough in the winter... well someone did and he rolled his truck he was 29 years old... i didn't know who he was, but i can't belive that he would try that, oh yeah forgot to say he took this 25 mph corner at 65 mph  in a truck.
we have taken that corner at 60 in a fully done up auto crossing car and awd... but man!!! and we sweep the sand away!!!

reading this really makes someone think about all the danger we are in everyday. But if you actually think about it you can get hurt getting out of bed or get cancer something like that. Things like that cant be prevented. But things like taking turns at 60 mph can. I just got into a car accsadent the other day and that opened my eyes. I had 2001 impala and i was going down a 4 lane road it was kinda raining outside. (not to bad) I was going probally 50-55 in a 45 and i looked away for a second and the lady in front of me slowed down and put on her turn signle when i realized this i looked in the other lane i couldnt get over and i slamed on my breaks and my brakes locked up and i slid into her back end probally going 20 or so. we were all fine. walked away from the acsadent but later her 8 month old doughter was brought outside and the mom was holding it and i thought about if i would have killed that lady that baby would have a mother it really mad me feel sad and upset for acouple of days. ( the baby wasnt in the car i guess i hit the lady near her house) I have noticed something my old self is coming back with driving fast and i want to know if i can do anything about it. Like people will be next to me and will try to pass me and i will acclerate i cant stop it. Its like i automaticly do it before i can even think about what may happen if i do that.

Once in a snow storm around here that happened to me. Some youngs guys in the car beside me did that. They thought it was funny. I thought that is was funny when I pulled up beside him and then parked my truck infront of him them at the stop light.

People can be BROKEN, of bad habits.

Yeah well their are people out their like hunter that want to take it into their own hands and beat the piss out of people to get out his agression. but you better watch out if you do that where i live by you will get shot. (i think) i live like 2 hours from chicago and the people thier dont take **** from no one. I saw a guy get robed and he cought up to the guy down the road when he was at a stop light punched through the front windshield and the guy inside of the car shot the man in the chest. Think about what you do before you do something.

Holy crap, man, take a chill. He's just a kid passing on some good advice for crying out loud. We don't need to be reading about that stuff here. You went a little haywire there, I think.

R33D, those feelings you mentioned are exactly why we suggest that superbikes be left to those mature and skilled enough to handle the responsibility they require.
