I just wanted to share an experience I had at work on Sunday with everyone:
Sunday afternoon I was dispatched to a local motocross track on an injured rider. We were told that the rider was in full cardiac arrest, and when I got there it was true. We did everything that could be done for the rider and spent almost a full hour between our work in the ambulance and that in the hospital ER, but he finally sucame to his injuries. The rider was 29 years old and had a wife, I'm not sure if he had children.
The EMTs who were on standby at the track told me that he had been going slowly over some small bumps and hit one wrong and was thrown over his handlebars. He landed on his head and back and was in cardiac arrest by the time they got to him. He had been wearing full protective gear (Full face motocross-type helmet, full body armored riding suit, gloves, armored boots). When I looked at his helmet, it was still intact and had no visible damage. The helmet also had a sticker on the side that said "NOVICE" in block letters. Now I have no idea how novice he was, or what actually happened, but my best guess is that he got onto some terrain that was beyond his ability. No matter HOW the accident happened, it did, and it took his life!
Some friends of mine ask me how I can want to ride a motorcycle when I'm a paramedic and see people hurt really badly on them. We all understand that riding is dangerous, this is a level of danger that we accept everytime we get on. Wearing full protective gear should be a no-brainer! Unfortunately, sometimes its not enough.
Everyone be careful out there!! We all enjoy riding our bikes, and I just want everyone to come home safe so they can ride again!
Nate.
