My first oil change went very well. I even cleaned the screen on the Engine Oil Sump. I used 3 quarts of Valvoline 4 Stroke motor oil, 10W40 and a K&N filter. Now I can crank that baby up to 3/4 throttle! I changed the final drive 90w oil also. All I could find was 80w90 weight final drive oil. I went to several places so I assume that is ok to use.?
Only 400 miles to go, then its full throttle all the time.........uh, full throttle if needed and that would be in RARE occasions of course!
One mechanic told me that if I use synthetic oil in the S50 it could void my warranty if anything went wrong, so I will wait till the warranty is up before I use synthetic oil.
Next I find a more comfortable seat. Any suggestions?

What are others opinions about doing their own wrenching while
the bike is under warranty?
For example, if simplegame had a problem down the road (while the bike is still under warranty).
How can one prove that x/y/z was done at such & such time,
if a warranty claim needs to be submitted?
I guess, getting the work done on video tape ;-)

Good Question!

When I bought the bike they attached a $900 service contract on the loan papers. I had to scream bloody murder to get it taken off. The sales manager told me later that all I had to do was keep a "service record". I write it down on the inside page of my aftermarket shop manual, since the factory manual is STILL not in print yet! I could buy a service record book and do it that way. I write down the filter brand and type and the oil brand, etc. date, mileage. I guess the only way to know if they would accept that is for a warranty claim to be filed.
It most likely would not come up unless they felt that the cause of the failure was the oil or filter or something done wrong like a loose oil drain plug or something like that. I have always done all my own work on 7 motorcycles and 13 cars and many of the vehicles were new. The only time I tried to use a warranty for a leakey head gasket, it wasn't covered! Some stop leak fixed that for the next 55000 miles!
I had some service work done on 1 of the new motorcycles I bought. They did not do half of the things they said they would do, like adjusting the clutch and the chain. They charged me 3 times the price for a quart of oil and it really looked to me like it wasn't even changed! From then on I swore I would do all the work myself and I have.
I do understand why someone would not want to do it themselves, but you are at the mercy of the shop, and most are probably good I suppose.

I currently have a $600 service contract on mine, that Im thinking
of cancelling.
Of the 3 used cars that I've previously owned, I did most of the basic work on them.
But this is my first motorcycle, and for some reason, I feel intimidated
about doing my own wrenching on it.
Especially since its under warranty, as I've been bitten by the warranty hawks before.

One thing you can do in addition to the service log you are keeping is to keep all receipts of the items you are using such as the oil, filter, and gear oil. If the receipts are dated and show the items on it,, they should also reflect a date on the log close to it to show where you did the service.

If you buy the oil filter and oil from the dealer,, then they will also provide you a receipt as well as the fact that 90% of all dealers have a computer that keeps track of the receipts sold for "X" amount of time.

I was told by the dealer here that the first service HAD to be done by them in order to maintain the warranty. I don't know if they were blowing smoke, or if it's true. It's going to cost $214 for the first service. After that, I'm doing the oil changes.

Just checking over the manual for the C50 again. I don't see anything in there saying that a 600 mile service has to be done by a dealer maintenance shop. Especially, there is nothing that says it will cancel your warrantee if it isn't done.

Besides that, it is all recommended services.

Just food for thought.
