Went on a 163 mile ride. Really got a great feel of my Gixxer. Kinda uncomfortable after 50 miles. I adjusted quite a bit. My wrists get kinda painful & the gloves make my fingers go numb, even when I'm holding the handles loosely. May need different gloves but I like the leather ones that I have.

Anyway, I got 376 miles under my belt  . I also found that I had to go above 6500 rpms slightly on the freeway to get away from those big trucks. It was windy on the freeway anyway & the trucks didn't make it any better. I can only squeeze 75mph out of 6500rpms. I did between 80 & 90mph every now & then, which put me between 7000 & 7500rpms. Will this hurt my engine in the long run since I've done this a couple times?

Anyhow, I'm thinking of making that trip again so I can get my first oil change. What are the costs of my upcoming first service & what all do they do (in detail, please)?

Gixxer from what i heard all they do is an oil change, check your chain, sprocket, swing arm, suspension and anything else that could possibly loosen while riding. Prices range from 150-350 but its different I guess depending on your area. Maybe you should call your areas local shops possibly where you purchased your bike and ask what do they charge for first time services and what does it include.

Thanks Uncle Bob!

Guess I just wanna hear an experience from someone. I've read my manual about 10 times & I still read it as if it were the first day.

By being in the military for 14 years I've found that the book way & the real way are totally different  .

Just wanna hear of experiences!

I called 2 shops in my area and one shop wants $220 for the first maintenance and the other one wants $110 for the maintenance. I called another dealership that is 45 minutes out of the way, but they only want $75, so you definitely need to check around.

If it were me i would take the 45 minute drive and only pay 75, hey at least you figure you spend about 10 more bucks on gas and you get a lovely ride cant beat that.

It will only hurt your engine if you say go from a stop and really slam it into red going through the gears. If you are at higway speeds and just accelerate a bit to pass (not cranking your wrist on the throttle), the rpm shift shouldn't be a problem. Until your cams get worn in nicely, it's a bad idea to make your bike fly from low to high RPMs.

OK, Folks!

Just hit 500 miles on my Gixxer  Dropped it off about an hour ago w/the dealer to have my first service completed. Gonna run around $120 big ones. Since I'm new to the game of Bike Maintenance, one of the repairmen spoke to me offline about some important stuff.

Gave me some good info. on the bike that I wasn't aware of. I was totally suprised at how helpful & informative the entire crew was. People were gathering around & staring at my Gixxer as if it were the first one they'd ever seen :D . I actually felt "PROUD" of the machine that I respect more & more each ride.

Anyway, I can't wait until the service is complete. Said it would be an hour or so before a mechanic could get to it & about 2 hrs to perform the service. Oh, I'm also having sliders installed on the front. Don't have much money left right now for the aftermarket stuff that I'd like to get. Later, Folks!

Service complete!

Oil Change, filter, etc. - $120
Sliders ------------------- $ 72
Labor ---------------------$ 68
-----------------------------------------
Grand Total - $260

Keeping it under 6,500rpms prior to my 1st service allowed me a max of 75mph on the freeway. Now I can go up to 11,000rpms. Don't exactly know how fast that would be but I guess-ta-mate 120-125mph  , which is definately enough for me to ride comfortably on the freeway so that I don't have to fear riding alongside or around big trucks. I only need about 80-90mph to go up to (at most).

After picking up my bike & getting on the freeway home I couldn't help but try out the new rpm range. I was doing 100mph before I knew it & had plenty of rpms left. I was on a 3 mile straight-a-way w/very, very little traffic & could have easily experienced what my Gixxer was made for but I used every ounce of my SELF-DISCIPLINE to calm myself (I mean every "OUNCE" that I ever possessed) :shm:

I could feel myself experiencing the 2nd stage of riding called "FALSE CONFIDENCE!" (stage quoted from a member of this forum - don't remember where it is documented but I go by this religously & definitely want to give this person credit).

Anyhow, I took my Gixxer home, parked it, & I'm still trying to calm down & let reality set in before I ride 'em again. Basically, I'm sorta punishing myself for a day or so because of my giddy-ous-ness  (don't believe that's a word but it works).
