I recently bought the Volusia(by the way, thanks Uncle Bob for the advice, I like it). Now I'm up around 600 miles and being told by the dealership that the first service will cost about $300. They say they will drain and replace all the fluids and adjust the valves.
A friend told me that this bike didn't really need the valves adjusted and that they'd just check the fluids.
What do you think, should I get it done or just save the money. I want to do whatever will make it last the longest.

Thanks,

JD

Find another dealer, my 600 mile service cost me $85 can including the valve ajustment.

Also on the volusia owners site this disparity in prices is adressed often but plenty of Vol owners pay $40/$50us for a valve ajustment ( actually they check the valve clearances and ajust if necessary ) plus $30/$40us for the fluid changes.

Thanks

Thanks!!! I had never owned a new bike before and didn't really know that they needed serviced that soon. But that price sounds alot better than what they are telling me.
Thanks again,

JD

The first service comes pretty quick, it's to make sure any debris from the fabrication process is removed from the engine. After the first the others are due a more reasonable intervals.

I found the best way to do it is take a Saturday and a bunch on reading from books and the internet and learn how to do it your self. I desided when I heard it was $400 that I was going to just do it myself. On a 16yearolds bugget I cant afford to have someone do it for me.

first service

I checked my records at home... I was wrong on the $200 - it was $135 if I bought just the one service - and if I buy 3 at a time they are $100 each. I passed 600 miles this past weekend - so it's going in for first service this week!

$300!!!

You must live in Seattle. Stick around to make sure they actually do the work they claim. You'd be surprised how far that estimate will drop when they know you're watching. Valve adjustment is a good thing, although it's usually not far off the mark, but you WILL want them to take a good look at the oil to make sure there isn't anything of concern sticking to the magnetic plug. They also should change your hypoid gear oil at the rear wheel end of the driveshaft while they're at it.

Last summer I bought a new Volusia and the salesman told me I should bring it in for service at 1000 km or 600 Miles for an oil change and Valve ajustment. I then talked to a service teck, and he told me just change the oil at 600 miles. He told me to wait to at least 5000 km or 3000 miles for a valve and teck service.

Of course the danger here would be that if you have any problems with the bike they could void the warranty for not following the service schedule, besides if you can find an honest tech it's not very expensive to have done.
