It is actually an old Yosh duct kit originally designed for the 87 750. All of the Schwantz superbikes were kitted with them. It was designed for use as a "faux airbox" (Janis had it partially right) when using velocity stacks and MIKUNI RS-Series carburetors. Normally, the air rushing beside the legs would cause the airflow underneath the tank to tumble, thus causing the intake tracts to suck the air in unevenly.
Using the duct kit vented clean air in there, and the side covers prevented the air from tumbling. The heat shield prevented excessive heat (and built 750 motors had plenty of it) from reaching the carburetors, allowing tuners to more accurately set-up the bike.
You can also use the kit on the 1100. They are extremely rare.
