Can you all recommend any brand of frame sliders over another? Or what to stay away from?

I found some really cool-looking mushroom-shaped ones, but I can't find them again to order them.

from what I understand make sure they are made of delrin. its some type of high impact resistant material. I know they work b/c a buddy of mine laid his bike down (only 5 mph, turn of all things) and he suffered a small scratch on the front fairing. Not really noticable. some touch up paint will take care of that.

Yeah, I'd also recommend the delrin kind. From what I've read, they hold up better than the nylon ones.

Heh....

Info on Delrin.

It's used in construction a lot too as a friction free bearing surface (like teflon). It is extremely similar to Nylon and wears down similarly, but seems to be a bit stiffer. It's a good solid plastic that just wants to slide against any surface it touches. The road will of course wear it down, but unless it's very cold, you shouldn't have to worry about it cracking on impact etc.

I learned that on an episode of BIG! one night.

I've ordered a set of Woodcraft frame sliders. They should be here next week.

I've never heard of nylon sliders........But they make some made or delrin and teflon. My front frame sliders are teflon, and my swingarm sliders are made of delrin. Theres hardly a difference between the two except delrin is generally half the price of the teflon.

The best place to get them without paying out the azz is ebay. I got my whole set for about 35 dollars, where as if I got them from other sites it whould have been about 110 dollars.

I have a question now. Are carbon fiber frame sliders REALLY necessary? They are there to protect your engine from severe damage not look pretty in my opinion; right :?

Just a note on sliders. In a crash even as minor as 5 or 10 MPH your slider can snap off at the mounting point which is usually the frame upper or lower engine mount. Damage can even go so far as cracking the cases of the motor. I am not against the sliders, I am just telling you that sometimes they save the bodywork but trash the frame and motor. Take your pick. both types of damage suck but a cracked case is going to cost more than fairings.

They pucks that serve as a high point on the side of the bike.

Theoretically, if the bike goes down with sliders installed it will slide on this new high point and not the frame or plastic fairings.

The downside is they (most, anyway) provide a single point at which all the force of side impact could potentially be concentrated. That's a lot of force.

I am glad I saw this thread, I am considering getting some frame sliders but it seems they may cause more damage than they are worth.

Motorcycle news did a review recently, they spoke to riders and racers about pro's and con's of frame sliders.
The basic response was if you are getting a set, don't budget, get good(expensive!)ones.
Also,if you drop the bike hard enough to snap a frame mounted slider then the bike was going to get beaten up anyway!

my opinion...delrin is the norm. I thought to myself..is there any better..and I thought metal. So I got a set of metal chrome ones.

I've never seen or heard of metal ones. I'm not sure if they even exist. I'm not sure what the pros are, but I would think that if they were made of anything other than aluminum or titanium, the weight of the slider would crack the fairing upon impact. That may be totally wrong though. I'm just thinkin.
