Hey,
All they have out for my bike is a slip-on muffler...will there by any power gains for using this or is it just for the sounds?

Next to nothing. In conjunction with a jet kit, maybe a few hp. You'd want to do it for the sound, or don't bother.

No offense meant, but with your bike the gains would be minimal. The bike only displaces so much exhaust, so there's not that much that can be done with it. Probably will sound better although I've never heard one up close.

bolt on and slip on are the same thing. If you are wanting to play with the exhaust in hopes of achieving even barely noticable hp increase then get a full system or all you are doing is changing the sound.

In the UK if you use an eftermarket end can that isn't stamped for use on roads you aren't very popular with the police, and since the first of September it is an endorsable offence, you get a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence(12 points and you are banned from driving).

While it's true that slip ons will only give you a minor increase in overall horsepower, one has to look at the increase throughout the entire rpm range of the bike in question.

I just finished reading a great article where they tested 30 slip ons on a YZF 600 (I think it was). The peak horsepower figures were only three or four HP higher than stock (and a few more could likely be squeezed out of it with a high flow air filter and adjusting the fuel mixture and timing), but what interested me was that the slip ons increased the HP in the lower rpm range - between 4,000 and 7,000 rpms where my bike (750 Katana) is somewhat lacking.

Another factor (albiet a small one) is that most slip ons will reduce the total weight of your bike - some are lighter than the stock can by more than 11 pounds!

They do change the sound of course, and some buy them for this purpose, but most slip ons cost upwards of $1,000 Cdn. and I don't think the gain is anywhere near worth that price.

I'll replace my exhaust system with an aftermarket one if and when it rusts out! :D

You might wanna double check this. I know that full systems will drop this much but I do not see how it would be possible to drop that much weight from just switching out cans.

Hello Peak,

I thought it was high too, until I did some more looking... I have lent the magazine (Sport Rider) to a friend, but will quote the exact figures they have when I get it back.

For now, check out the links below... the first one shows a slip-on that is 19 pounds lighter than the stock can, of course that's a dual exhaust system (remember, there is also up to 20 inches of exhaust pipe on a slip-on... not just the muffler, that would be a bolt-on, and the only thing left to replace with a full-on exhaust system in most cases would be the header - and I don't think you'd find a lot of extra pounds there).

Also, I would agree that most slip-ons will only save 4-7 pounds over stock, but there are lots of examples where the weight savings are much higher. Check out the second link - and note the weight savings listed there are in kilograms (2.2 pounds per kilogram).

1-2hp max... It's the middle range you will feel a little more torque. And the sound is worth the extra quid :)

I am so glad I found this. The other day a friend of mine was trying to tell my wife and I that a new exhaust system would increase the hp by at least 40. I told him he was crazy and of course he got mad that I called him out. Then I showed him this and he said you were all wrong...

I swear, I said the same thing to my wife.

I even asked him, so on my bike, by the previous owner adding a Micron exhaust system he increased the hp by almost 50%? He really didn't have a response, then I said, if that is true then my bike now has more hp than your 750 since your 750 has the stock pipe...he really didn't like that.

Okay, so I know you believe me about the weight savings now, and I still don't have the magazine back with the tests, but I did find another example in the most recent edition of Motorcyclist (September issue) that shows a Honda RC51 using a Sato titanium slip-on system... says it saves 14 pounds over stock (when also using the titanium exhaust hangers).
