I know...and I have a looooooooong story about why I hate Comcast and computers right now. I may need some advice from all you "computer geeks" out there!!

Here's the short version. Comcast came out and the guy said that he doesn't recommend the wire installation because my house is stucco and because he'd have to tack a wire basically halfway around my house due to where the cable box is and where I need the internet installed. He recommened I go with "home Networking" or wireless.

Well, after going back and forth with scheduling problems and bad customer service calls with comcast, they advised me to go to an electronics store and buy the wireless router that I need and install it myself and then just call them to activate the service. sounds simple, right!??

Okay, so I got a cable router, a PCI card thing-y and a splitter. I think I hooked it up right...I've got a coax cable going from the wall into the splitter and have another coax cable going into the modem, which hooks into the router. Then, I had to go install this PCI card into my pc, which was really scary!

I had to take off the computer cover off and I installed this card. I was so worried that I was going to slip and wreck something in my computer. I got it in, and the directions said that when I turned my pc back on, it should recognize the new hardware...it didn't. I took the cover off again, and the card looks "seated" correctly and everything.

I'm stuck!!

I did figure out how to download pics from my camera into my computer and print...so that's the only thing I've got going for me right now!!

Well, any suggestions??? :?:

Windows

What version of Windows are you running? You might have to go through and follow the Add New Hardware Wizard in your control panel. Even tho its PCI it might not be plug-and-play, meaning youd have to tell to computer where is it and how to run it(but its easy). Try that, go into Control Panel>Add New Hardware Wizard and tell it what you have. IF you go into control panel and dont have Add New Hardware, there should be an option on your left saying "switch to classic view" hitting that youll see Add New Hardware. Hopefully that would work, If it dont work let us know. or PM me and ill walk you through it.

My dad had comcast cable internet for awhile. I didn't like it at all. I got him a router for Christmas, and when I hooked it up, it didn't work. Comcast scans your hardware after every bootup to see if you've added any new networking devices, and if something is detected, they shut off your internet connection until you register it with them. If I had registered it as a router like they wanted me to, they would have charged him a monthly fee for "home networking", so I registered it as a new NIC instead. It worked fine after that. I'm not sure if comcast does that where you guys are, but I think that's rediculous. I have Charter cable internet and I love it. They don't care if you have a router or not, which is good for me because I have 3 PCs.

Are you sure the computer didn't recognize the new hardware and install the drivers for it?

It's possible that it's a problem between the router and the cable modem and not the network card at all. You might try opening up Explorer and typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. If you get a login screen for the router, then you know that the network card is working and communicating to the router fine.

Did the card come with a drivers disk? If so, you may need to install them from the disk. If it didn't then here is how to check to see if the Windows at least saw that you installed the card:

1). Right click on your My Computer icon and select Properties. This will open the System Properties window. (If you don't have a My Computer icon on your desktop, right click anywhere on a blank area of the desktop, select Properties, select the Desktop tab, then click on Customize Desktop. Check the box beside My Computer then close all those windows.)

2) Select the Hardware tab from the System Properties window.

3) Click on Device Manager to open the Device Manager window.

4) See if there is a Network Adapters line item in the Device Manager window.

5) Click the little '+' sign by the Network Adapters line item

6) Check to see if the wireless adapter you installed is listed.

If the network adapter you installed is listed then the computer has at least recognized the card and may or may not have installed the drivers properly. If the card is not listed at all, then it didn't recognize the card for some reason.

If there is more than one card listed under Network Adapters, then you might want to remove the extra card (or, if it's built in to your motherboard, disable it in the BIOS).

Well, this is getting a little long, so I'll end it here for now :)

If you're sure that Windows at least is aware of the card, even though it doesn't work, then post back and I'll try to come up with a list of things you might try next. I'm not familiar with wireless network cards much, but I have a few friends here at work that are.

Only through my work laptop, not my home pc and I can't download pics onto my work pc...
Burn them onto a CD at home, then attach pics from CD to emails at work, send them to someone and have them host them on a site for you. There is always a way to do something.

NOOOOOO... It's just because of the restrictions they've put on our "rights"...you can't do a lot of stuff...it makes sense, they just want to try and prevent us from downloading something that will damage the computer...but it's a pain in my ars!!!

Just mail them to me like you did those other pics ( BTW warn me when you send that type of pic, my wife might have seen them ).
I think I'm due for a trip to Montréal!

Gina, seems like you got some good advice already, try that and let us know. I can also help as I'm pretty familiar with networking. Hang it there. Technology is wonderful... when it works. I know I write software for Voice over IP telephones.

On a side note, I got DSL at home, installed a router and running 3 computers, 2 Macs and 1 PC. Everything is communicating together.

I run a router also, it was very easy to set up. Currently I only have one PC but I am planning on adding additional PC's.

Do what was said earlier and manual run/install the router. The only problem I have found with wireless routers is speed, but as long as it isn't to far away you should be okay. My router is wireless or wired  , but I chose to just wire it up.

Another note: I used to be a carpenter so I am not sure what they are talking about. You can tack into stuck'o without a prob, as long as you use the correct equipment. What they can do is get these clips that hold cable and have one screw hold then put them every 4' or so. Drill a hole in the stuck'o and use a metal screw...Voila

What's a NIC?? How can I intelligently talk to Comcast and register mine that way instead of getting nailed for the "home networking" charge?

I think the guy was just lazy now that I'm hearing all of this.
