I took my Gixxer 750 in for an oil change. The back tire had a nail of all things. Now I've told the dealer to change both tires. But I had a nail in the rear. I was told that the Dunlp tire is really available only in Japan. That the dealer can order it but it will cost me $300.00. I can replace the front and the rear for 350.00 and that they have it in stock. Although I told the dealer to do this, I really don't have a choice, do you think this is true what I was told?

Note I'm not looking to go to some internet discount place and get one cheaper. On my Gixxer I don't want to skimp on tires..or really anything with safety.

Any opinions?

Yes i have one opinion...you should kindly call that dealer back and tell him GOD BLESS YOU CHILD. whewww that was a positive response to what i really wanted to say about that dealer, anyway with regards to your post he is partly telling the truth but you could have saved alot of money just purchasing a different tire other then the particular model you purchased. The Pirelli Diablo Corsas are a very good brand that cost cheaper then what you paid and track wise/street perform alot better. But in response to your previous post heres a website that sales all kinds of Dunlop see if you can find the model you paid the $300 bucks for. :D I have heard of Dunlops being put on Japanese models and America getting bridgestone however its not impossible to buy a Dunlop tire because a tire is a tire it isnt specific for Japan, just thats the company that Suzuki chose to use in that particular region of the world same goes for the USA.

P.S. In the pic below are the Pirelli Diablo Corsas, this is what was said about them in a track test. "That heap of rubber consists of eight Diablo Corsas and eight Dragon Supercorsas, all from Pirelli. We came away highly impressed by their grip and endurance over two days of track-thrashing."

The tire that comes on that bike from the factory is a Dunlop 218. They suck. There are much better tires out there such as the above mentioned Pirelli's or Michelin Pilot Sports. I have ran each type on both my 750's. I just got a set of Michelin H2's today to put on. Paid $100 for a set of race take offs. They look new. Point is there are many different avenues for getting tires.

$300 for a rear tire is insane. I would have told your dealer to shove that $300 tire up his ass. I can buy a brand new Pilot Sport, have it mounted and computer balanced for around $140.

That's it a Dunlop 218. And the dealer had something like 208 or 207 or whatever.

You know, I have to admit. Any time I've saved money or anything...for some reason it's always costed me more in the end. Thank you very very much on the suggestions on the tires.

There was another factor too. I didn't want to be not riding. I knew I would pay a higher price. But I felt like I had to get out there and ride. Give you an idea I received the bike on July 13th...yesterday being August 23rd I already have over 2,000 miles on it. Riding this thing for me is like a drug. I can't get enough of it. Now of course no drugs but still..this thing just to ride is wonderful.

Thank you all again for your help.

It's a high alright...just overall still gets me upset..350 for a set of tires...yet I don't want to wait..so it's a trade off.

So how you making out now...did you get to the point of finding anything new and exciting like the front wheel comes up easy or...how you making out with the hills and starting?

I got the hills pretty much licked. Coming home from the highway I made a point to find the roads with hills and stopsigns or stoplights. I'm just more aware of the engine and the revs. As long as I stay below 4K, I can start with no problem.

No I haven't got that front wheel off the ground. I can't go above 7 grand for another 300 miles. I'm anal about breaking this thing in. I plan on having this for sometime, so I'm taking all the necessary steps to ensure a long life. I keep hearing that this bike "wakes up" after 6K, but I haven't hit more than 7K and that was in 6th on the highway, so it wasn't brutal like I keep hearing.

I'm not in a hurry to find out how to kill myself. After I break the first 500, I'll still be easy on getting the high revs going. This bike is so sweet! Even my stepdad was like, "now I know why everyone likes these things." He's a chopper kinda guy.

7K in 6th...that's over a hundred...I know...I've done it...not that I'm proud of it ....but I did it.

I know what you mean on not wanting to kill yourself. I found a very senior rider..in fact he's a stunt rider for shows. Amazing the things he can do. He drives a 2004 Gixxer 1000.

Last night before while taking my bike in, he was the one giving me a ride home...I saw him pull a wheelie. I looked over at him at the stop sign and started talking to him. I felt like a newbie. You know that feeling of someone so much better than you. I was saying things like, "man I wish I could do that. " Or, "I pulled the front end up and it scares me."

He asked me to follow him back to his place which was on the way....he wanted to show me something that would help.

In his garage were three motorcycles. They really looked beat up. You see he was trying to make a point to me and it went like this.

Here's my first Gixxer an 1100, I destroyed the forks and the back end after I dumped it doing a wheelie in town. Here's my newer Ninja, you can see the fairing cracked when I flipped it over doing an endo. Here's my CBR that the transmission is shot and the forks are bent. He added that he's been to the emergency room numerous times..and had a pin in his...and I stopped him. He could tell with the medical things I really didn't want to hear it because you know..it's upsetting.

So finally he added, "Do you really want to be able to ride like me and pay the price?"

I told him it's just like sick but I get his point.

Last thing he said was just ride normal...and your body and your bike will stay in better shape. And all I have to do is just not say I don't stunt and those without bikes will assume I do. And those that do stunt won't care that I don't.

Kind of a strange story...but..thought I would pass it on. Last night I think really broke my wanting to be a kewl looking stunt rider with the thought of what it will cost.

Great story you shared. The guys here have been pretty lucky. One guy just broke his collarbone, one leg and an arm, while on the highway. It was late at night and no one else got hurt. If you associate with stunters than those who don't ride think you are a part of it. In the past two weeks there have been two major wrecks that are associated with the local group here.

The thing is they were doing a show for NHRA import drag racing. They weren't even there and they are getting blamed for it. The media is on a witchhunt now, and anyone with a bike is being warned to be careful and let this die down. The media wont let it go away though. There is a HUGE ride coming up the end of SEPT. Suppose to be like over 1000 bikes. Can you imagine 1000 bikes blocking the highway??? I can't wait.

I dont need that for my ego though. I want to ride! Just the fact that I am on a sportbike garners plenty of attention from people. Along with those people in cars with lights on top.
