Hi Folks:

I have just joined this forum. As with most everything that has to do with bikes, I am completely green: I've never been on a motorcycle before !!!

I have recently got my California motorcycle permit and am very excited about learning to ride a bike (I've signed up for the CHP-approved course at Cerritos College and the class starts in June).

I am looking to buy a used SZ250 so that I can practice and make mistake without costing mula to repair. Can someone point me to where I can find used motorcycle near Whittier, La Habra, or Fullerton, CA ? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Age probably has something to do with it, as back in my younger days, I've done some pretty dumb things.

Also, at this point in my life, I'm more interested in having a good time but maintaining an emphasis on safety. My bones don't heal as fast as they used to :)

Gixxerdale will be around soon. He lives in Chatsworth. FIVEINCH is also in your area, up toward Oxnard. I used to live in Chatsworth and Thousand Oaks, but I'm living a bit farther east now (about 8000 miles farther east :) )

Ya, welcome. Dale is better suited, i don't know your area well at all, let alone dealers. Private partys are ok as long as you have a cerified mechanic check the bike out before you buy it.

There is a link on the forum with a bunch of stuff you should look at, and i really wish i could find it :(

See inspiron, there are smart newbs out there, we are just few and far between :)

Are you sure you don't want a 1000 Gixxer? How about just a 750 so you can do wheelies?

No? Really? Hooray! :)

Sorry, don't mean to use your introduction to be facetious. Welcome! I've got nothing else to add because you are already doing everything exactly as you should. Permit, riding classes, and looking for a used bike to learn on. Got good gear yet?

Hahaha.

Seriously, the thought of getting a Busa right away had come across my mind. However, it's just that the more I thought about it the more uncomfortable I got, especially since I know for a fact that I am going to fall at least a few times and that it's going to cost a lot more to repair a brand new Busa than a couple-year-old GZ250. Also, it's going to take the GZ250 a few more seconds to get me into trouble than a Busa-class machine.

Eventually, I think I will get a GSX, but not before I take the advanced rider's course (after I get my real license that is).

Wheelies ? Sure, give me another 10 years of riding experience and I will think about it :)

A local shop has a 2003 Demo GZ250 for sale at $2600. It's got a scratch mark on the front fender (is this even the right terminology ?) but otherwise looks completely new at about 1,000 miles. Does the price seem reasonable ? If not, then I would like to find other local dealers that have used 250-cc class machines.

Speaking of getting gears, I am buying a full-face helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads this weekend. I already have a leather jacket and a pair of boots. Have I missed anything ?

Lastly, a bit of administrative question: I've unable to log back into this website from a new browser window because I think I had mis-typed my password and I had requested a password-reset a few times already but not getting the reply in my email. Who can I contact to get some help on this one ?

Thank you all !!! :bows:

Hey Welcome! Did I hear the use of common sense in this thread? What a treat that is to hear.

As for Inspiron, he had to go east! He wore out his welcome here! JUST KIDDING!!!! Actually he wanted to be closer to his Swiss bank accounts! Darn rich guys!

Local bikes? Try CycleTrader and CraigslistLA. Both on line. Both will give you a good idea as to fair pricing for various models and a lot of local bikes to choose from. Kelly Blue Book can give you some good price guide lines if you find a used bike that you are interested in.

You might go look around Chaparral Motorsports in San Bernardino and Berts Mega Mall in West Covina. Both have large selections of new bikes, and a good choice of used bikes. Check out the selection of gear there too before you purchase anything else.

If you need more info or have more questions feel free to PM me anytime.

OK, Inspiron, you can go back to counting your money now!

I don't have any money ... I've got a girlfriend and a horse. Between them, they dispose quite nicely of any disposable income I may have had ... :(

Funny you should mention Berts. That's the first place I went shortly after I got my permit. It's there where I realized that I am not ready for a GSX yet, in spite of the salesperson's smooth talking. I will check out the other places you mentioned.

Thank you very much.

Sup Wookie! I have been riding dirt bikes most of my life but I just purchased a new bike also. I took the California motorcycle safety course last weekend and I would recommend it to anyone. We had some total n00bs in the class as well some experienced riders and over all it was pretty fun and I learned a lot.
