I recently was given a 81 GS650G by a friend, because he didn't have time to work on it. It has an electrical problem, I was wondering where would be a good place to start looking. Thanks.

This is most likely your problem/answer. I own a GS also and they are famous for weak ignitions!! But there is a wonderful fix for them made by Electrex. Also, a world of information at that website for these bikes. Join up Buddy.

81 650GX if it is Shaft drive-(G) stands for that. (X) stands for 1981
(L) will be the cruiser type, relaxed bars and etc...

It has a shft drive, with Vetter Hard saddle bags, and windscreen.

Probably just a 81 GS650G, it will say if it is a GL

That's a G model only Charles. L model has bars that come farther back to the rider. Fairing and bags and etc.. are aftermarket someone installed on there. Hope this helps you out.
