i have just bought a 92 gsxr - 50 miles and engine broke down :(

can anyone tell me if it's "easily" possible to change for a 96 gsxr750 engine? does anyone ever did that? or should i look around for an engine until 94 (i think thats the year of the last same engine type)

thanks in advance for the help

Uh, A 1992 GSX-R is a oil-cooled model. That was the last year of the O/C 750s. Suzuki changed to water cooling in 1993.

Motors will not swap from later models, unless you really want to do some insane work.

While the world got a water-cooled GSXR750 in 1992, the U.S. had to make due with bold (and I do mean bold) new graphics, an unintentional power increase to near 100, a $200 higher price at $6699, and an overweight and under powered liquid-cooled GSXR600 little brother. There had been meetings at Suzuki about a radical redesign to a twin-spar frame/downdraft carburetor layout, but the proposal was reportedly shot down by marketing guys saying that it would be a "me too" design and "it wouldn't look like a GSX-R." I wonder where those guys are now. In their defense, the GSX-R was still selling well.

The 1993 U.S. model went through a major change. Finally, Suzuki engineers gave up their losing battle with the heat-versus-power trade-off and went to water-cooling. The results were actually less horsepower in street trim, more power in race trim with a successful return to 750cc Supersport racing, and the heaviest GSXR750 ever. Suzuki engineers didn't just abandon their much-beloved oil cooling, though. (In fact, Suzuki has current streetbikes with engines derived from the original GSXR's oil-cooled engine.) They retained the first stage of the oil pump that circulated oil through the engine as well as sprayed the undersides of the pistons. The rest of the cooling system was over-engineered to help racing efforts which had been hurt the most by the oil cooling system's shortcomings. The new cooling system had twice the cooling capacity of the 1992 model's air/oil-cooling system.

Can't be done at a resonable price. But you may have luck on your side. That motor, with some internal variations, has been produced since the mid 80's. In different models, and still produced today. 1200, 1100 Bandits, 1100, 750, 600 Katanas (although 600 Kats are pretty sluggish), and of course any GSX-R from 1986-1992. That means theres tons of motors out there, but they're getting gobbled up by drag racers and legend drivers. GSX-R motors are the best, but the 1200 Bandit hauls too. Katanas dont breathe as well. If you can't tell where one came out of, it's easy to tell by engine color. GSXR's are grey, Katanas are black, and Bandits are silver. They always have cc's cast into the cylinders. Good luck!

Lets not forget that motormounts are in their respective locations for a reason. Reduced vibration and counterbalancing within the crankshaft. Since Im a stickler for these types of things I'm very cautious when it comes to fabricating something on 2 wheels.

I'll swap motors all day on a 4 wheeler or go kart but on motorcycles center of gravity are key on both vertical and horizontal axis'

Remember, ppereira is in Portugal. They had the Water Cooled version of the 750 in 1992. US didn't get it until '93.

Unless you are talking about mounting an O/C motor in a W/C frame. I wouldn't do it, but it might be able to be done. I don't see how that would be cheaper than just finding one on eBay or at a junkyard and just bolting the W/C motor in.
