i have an old GS and i dont like the way the handle bars look, they reach up too high. i was wondering if i could just travel on over to the salvage yard and pick up some bars that are shorter with the same outside diameter? i know it'll slightly change my riding position, but will it affect anything else?

I changed the handle bars on my GS500. I picked up dirt bike bars (Oneal's) for about $20. It does change the riding position, but I actually like it. It feels more stable. Here's a pic...its' the only one I have available online so it's not the best of the handlebars...

Swapping bars is a popular modification. Just make sure the new ones are the same diameter, and that they don't swoop down and hit the tank when turned all the way. While you are at it, now is a good time to change grips if you want. If you have wires that run iside the bars, you may need to drill some holes in the new ones to match. But most bikes have external wiring.
