It's a little lock which is fit by default on many bikes. You have a key to unlock the pin, and then you put your helmet strap in there and lock it. Wouldn't recommend this over night, but it's a nice way to be able to secure your helmet while going away for a few minutes.

Something like that would be nice for when I ride the bike to work or to school...that way I don't have to carry it around with me....anybody know where I can get one or how about how much they cost?

Any ideas on how secure they are?

The helmet lock on a bike is NOT meant to carry a helmet WHILE you ride. It is good to leav you helmet on your while you go for a coffee provided that you can see your bike at the time.

There are possibly commercial alternatives but the bungee net (or cargo net) is the safest and cheapest.

Yeah, I'm not looking for something to carry a helmet while I ride, just something to keep the helmet on the bike while I'm at work or in class.

[EDIT]
Nevermind, the newbie is an idiot and should've read the owner's manual

Helmet locks are either locking swivel type hasps or hooks located beneath the seat. Helmets with quick release buckles do not work in conjunction with locks (at least none that I've owned) - you need the D-ring part of the helmet strap to use with the lock.

Just to clarify - a bungee (cargo) net (or top trunk if so equipped) is the safe way to carry an extra helmet.

Helmet locks are only for when the bike is parked. As mentioned above, I wouldn't use the helmet lock if away from the bike (out of sight) for extended periods.

Helmet locks are normally stock features - I've never seen them available as aftermarket items. They're usually integrated into the design of the tail section or underseat configuration.

+1. Did you bother to look at your bike?
