When I bought my helmet back in September, I bought the one I liked the best. It's shiny & black. I wasn't thinking about safety.

I'd like to put some kind of reflective tape on the helmet to make it more visible. Is that a ridiculous idea? Would it look bad? If you think it could be okay, what type of reflective tape would you recommend?

Someday I'll buy a more visible helmet. For now, the black one is all I have.

Stickers

I bought some day glow reflective stickers at Sports Authority for my bicycle helmet, it's a half dozen round stickers about an inch accross on a sheet, I put them in a V pattern and they look fine, and can be added anywhere you want. On top of that they are VERY visible both at day and at night.

Just a thought..

Thanks, guys. I didn't realize there were so many options. I like the trucker-mudflap girls.

I kinda like the black widow. Same colors as my gixxer and they both have a deadly bite!

I was kidding about the trucker girls. I wouldn't put them on my helmet.

The "LA Biker" sticker is great, but it really wouldn't apply here.

I think I'll go with the b&w checkered flags, and a couple of the bicycle helmet stickers. I don't want too many stickers on the helmet, just some to increase visibility.

i hear you on this one. i have a black 3/4 helmet with face shield. will be getting a black bike.

i want to look matched when riding, but have to consider safety, especially when riding at night. i think when i get a real riding jacket i will get one that is black and another bright color, and then use that color as an accent in different parts of anything i wear. i dont think i am going to do anything to the helmet though.

on a street bike, bright colors seem to fit right, but on a black cruiser, its hard to get away form just doing everything black!

If you want to stay all black you may wish to consider "Black Reflective Tape" Yes, its black but reflects white! So it shows up great at night. I first saw it on a friend's BMW. He applied them to the back of his black saddlebags. You couldn't see them in daylight but the reflected bright white when headlights illuminated them from begind. Here's a ULR to helmet tape:

Now that is neat stuff, YellowJacket. Thanks for that link. Being another of those 'basic black' afficionados, this could come in handy.

I like the black reflective tape also! A buddy in my Southern Cruisers chapter is a graphic artist, and he buys sheets of it. he cuts out flames and covers about half of a full face...you can't really see them in daylight, but when the light hits them they reflect back bright as can be. Very cool...but he gets about $50 to do it to a helmet, and has a two-month waiting list.

A local bike shop had a small tomestone taillight that goes on the back of a helmet...a little wireless transmitter gets wired to your bike, and the helmet taillight acts as a brake light. I might grab one...

In my riding in the last 2 years, I have been buzzed very often by flocks of crows, and a few hawks. This is almost every time I ride & I couldn't figure out why, for the life of me. Then one day in the fall, it dawned on me. It only happens when I wear the shiny BLACK helmet. When I wear the blue & silver full-face job, nothing like that ever happens. And these rides are mostly on the same roads! I figured out that the more aggressive birds are noticing that the shiny black helmet moving along below them could be a crow, and they react defensively. And crows don't care for interlopers, either. These birds have excellent eyesight, but are high up in the trees, and all they see, through all the tree branches, is this shiny black object moving along at speed! They don't know what it is until they investigate. And they investigate VERY thoroughly. My wife has a red helmet and she has no problem. After this helmet wears out, no more black ones! All of our rides are on back country roads. Maybe I should stick to the highway!
I also know they are among the least visible helmets, also.
Ride safely

I ordered some of that black reflective tape. I can put it on the back of the passenger backrest (which is black). I can also put them on my black helmet.

Pretty cool.
