hi,
i was wondering if any of you had a few minutes free to help me out a bit with my Design and Tech A2 level coursework. basically, i will be re-designing the common paddock stand, so that it can be used on both the front and back wheel of ANY motorcycle. i realised my micron paddock stand isnt quite as universal as they would like to believe as i couldnt get the bloody thing on without removing a shed load of bits on my RF600.

im looking for reviews and feedback concerning current paddock stands available on the market. the information im looking for are along the lines of:

1. why did you buy one
2. who is the manufacturer and what is the price you paid
3. why did you choose that particular manufacturer
4. does the stand work for you
5. any problems you have encountered
6. does it need redesigning
7. which features would you like changed on the stand and why

and anything else you think might be useful. all comments or 'reviews' will be much appreciated. you can either simply reply to this discussion, or send it to me in and email ([email protected], or [email protected], or [email protected])

if possible, think of the paddock stand from a designer's point of view, and please do not be shy to critisise the stand as these will be factors which i could improve in my own design, and will therefore earn me more marks.

maybe in the near future there will be a Perfect paddock stand on the market, just as you want it. who knows...

1. why did you buy one: I bought a set to make it easier to work on my bike and for any time that I have to leave it alone for any length of time (deployments)

2. who is the manufacturer and what is the price you paid: Handy Stands, paid $109 to my door.

3. why did you choose that particular manufacturer: Price was right

4. does the stand work for you: stands are very stable but could be better.

5. any problems you have encountered: The front stand is the "nipple" type that sticks into the bottom of the forks, can't really work on the forks when they are supporting the weight of the machine.

6. does it need redesigning: Not really, I should of spent the extra for a front stand that lifts at the triple tree.

7. which features would you like changed on the stand and why: The front stand for reasons stated above

I had to remove my centerstand because of a dogbone change.

redlinestands - $60ish for the rear

3. why did you choose that particular manufacturer
They had exactly what I was looking for and at the right price

4. does the stand work for you
Does everything I need it to do.

5. any problems you have encountered
It requires a few changes to work with other bikes, its easy to adjust though.

6. does it need redesigning
No.

7. which features would you like changed on the stand and why
All I would change on it is the finish, it came bare metal, and I have no ability to get it powder coated cheaply.

I bought a rear stand that cost £20 and I made my own front stand that cost £0!

I bought them mainly to get wheels off because it is cheaper to get loose wheels fitted with tyres rather than a ride in service.

I would rather have the stand that clips to the middle of the bike and leaves the front and back free,that might be a project for me next year.

aftermarket centre stand

i founda stand that does the job of a normal paddock stand but uses the bike's centre of gravity to lift the wheels. it clips on to the footrests and it is very simple to use to. quite expensive though i have heard.

That's a great find. I really like the Hydraulic lift that has been adapted to work with a sportbike. I already have the lift from Sears for my other bikes. Never thought of the adaptation though. I got the word out to a fabricater friend of mine already! Thanks for the great idea! :bluethum:
