Hi there! I'm brand new at this and I just bought an '87 Intruder 700. Got new tires put on at the dealership. The bolt which attaches the speedometer cable onto the inside of the fender and into the front right fork came undone and buried itself in the front tire sidewall, causing a lovely 1/2 inch trench around the entire tire. Lucky for me the rubber flying up from it was a warning something was wrong, or there would have been a shredded tire and rider on the highway. This bolt head on the inside of the fender is literally 2 mm away from the tire sidewall. Of course the service dept at the dealership took absolutely no responsibility for not checking the condition of bolt.

IS THIS NORMAL??? Seems awfully close engineering. Anybody else ever have this happen? The thing is, all it needs to do is loosen one turn and the spinning wheel will just grab it and spin it out, and it'll jam into the tire again. Weird if you ask me.

Is it the stock tire size or is it larger than what the manual specs for that bike? Sounds like to tight of a fit. Bikez list the following as stock size for the 87 Intruder;
Front tyre dimensions: 100/90-19
Rear tyre dimensions: 140/90-15

This is one case where I don't think the dealership is at fault.

You brought it in asked them to change the tire, they take the wheel off install the tire then put it back on . That's what you paid for isn't it.

Or do you expect them to retorque every nut and bolt on the bike in case something came loose you didn't know about ?

Just chalk this one up to bad luck.

Am assuming here that the tires were the right size and if not then you would have reason to complain if that dealership sold you the wrong tires. If you bought the tires elsewhere well you're back to square 1.

Thanks for the ideas -- I really should have thought to check that the tire was the right size. I will do that tonight when I get home.

Uncle Bob -- I may be a newbie but I'm not a complete idiot. I do not expect the dealership to check every nut and bolt on the bike when they change a tire. I do expect them to anticipate that there might be a problem with a bolt head that is so close to the tire sidewall you can barely pass a piece of paper between the two. And this is something I could not see as it's inside the fender, but they certainly could see it when they put the bike up and replaced the tire.
