hey all, just wanted to say hi. I'm 17 and right now just have a Honda Civic, which is moderately modded, but in May I'll be getting my motorcycle license, so I'm saving up for a planned GSX-R600 close to summer; it'll probably take me that long to save up enough money. I mainly just wanted to introduce myself, but I do have a couple of questions.

I know this is a suzuki board, and so opinons will be biased, but what do you guys think of the CBR600, and the YZF-R600, as compared to the GSX-R?

Lastly, I'm already starting to look around for a jacket, gloves, and helmet. I'm thinking that I will get my bike repainted a really deep, glossy black, and do the same with the helmet; maybe have a few white/grey highlights on the bike and clothes, but pretty much black. What brands/websites/whatever would you suggest looking into for Helmets and jackets? I want a leather jacket, some builtin armor would be nice, but not the chopper-style jackets, if you know what I mean. Thanks.

First off, welcome to the site.

Check out newenough.com for the leathers. They have quite a few closeouts regularly.

As for the bike, I tend to think that a GSX-R is a bit much for a first bike, but at least you're looking at getting good gear. Wear it. Personally, I owned a '94 CBR600F2 for a couple years. It was a nice bike and very fast (jet kit, full exhaust). I decided to go a little more comfortable this time, so my Kat is all stock except for a Corbin seat. For reliability, I think all three that you are looking at should be fine, although if buying used the bike may have been abused.

I really suggest that you look at something a little less powerful for your first bike (since you like the sportbike look, maybe EX500 Ninja or Kat600). Then, sell the bike after a year and get your gixxer. If you must start with a gixxer, hold off on modding it for awhile because you'll probably drop it at least once.

ive looked into getting a smaller/cheaper/less powerful bike, but after looking into it, the main reason I like sport bikes is their looks, and I have yet to find a cheap learner bike that looks good. As far as modding the bike goes, it will go unmodded for a VERY long time. First of all, after the initial purchase, I won't have much more money to spend on it, and, honestly, a stock gixxer is plenty fast for me...for not at least...in a few years im hoping to save up for a Hayabusa...mmm....

I realize 'good looks' are relative, and your idea of 'good looks' is probably waaaaay different from mine (I say that because you drive a 'moderately modded' Civic... ;)), but here's an option:

Suzuki GS500F

well, as far as the civic goes, im 17 and my dad bought it for me. As soon as im out of college I'll probably be getting a 3rd gen. RX-7; man those things are perfection. Anyways, one of the biggest things that I guess is just personal opinion is the seat. I really don't like one piece seats; you know, I want a step between the driver seat and the passenger.

You'll get little respect in any decent motorcycle forum stating that you're choosing your bike for the seat appearance. Do a little more reading on the available models to make a more informed choice.

As I've said before, a person buying a bike for looks alone probably shouldn't be riding at all.
