today the GS450-S started acting really wierd, it was surging, sputtering at idle, and stalling. Luckily I was almost home, so I limped it home and went to pick up some carb cleaner (in my car). The can says I'm supposed to spray it into the carb throat while the engien is running. Anyone know for sure how to use this stuff? It's incredibly flammable, and spraying it strait into a running engine just seems...well, really bad for the engine.

actually yeah, it is incredibly flammable, but i use that stuff all the time when i'm trying to get my bike to start for the first time of the season. its just like engine primer. but i've never used it like that, kinda seems like it'd be a waste. i've always pulled the carbs off and taken them apart, then used the carb cleaner to clean all the parts with some lint free rags. and for the really dirty parts, let them soak in the cleaner, just make sure you dont soak anything rubber, it'll destroy the seal it makes. good luck.

They probably recommend doing a little spritzing while the engine is running so that you don't end up with a bunch of cleaner damaging your rubber diaphragm and seals etc. by sitting there and not getting evaporated off. I've always removed and disassembled my carbs to clean them. It's better to be thorough about cleaning your carbs, then a minimalist approach. Once you clean them thoroughly, you shouldn't have to revisit them for a while. :)
