To see if the rumors were true. I was told that my bike would go to 70 in 2nd. By the time I hit 70 I had plenty of tach left and pushed it to 75.

At least I wasn't in 6th.

this bike has ridiculous power. I am quite sure I could have pulled the front wheel up with the torque I still had. I met an old Harley rider and he said he saw a Madura do a wheelstand at 70.

Most bikes have ridiculous power. I never really measured it, but it seems to me that I can accelerate to 60mph in about 3 seconds. Maybe if I practice, I can push that even below 3 seconds. And this is just an average street bike with a 600cc engine. It's crazy - you can beat a Ferrari with an average bike.
If traffic allows me, I often play the 'accelerate from the stop light game'. I look back after about 200 yards and the cars are barely pulling accross the white line. I guess it is just simple physics - cars can't beat the power to weight ration of a bike.

Not to burst your bubble, but a long(ish) wheelbase bike weighing over 500 lbs. with only 60 lbs-ft won't do that without some help from the clutch. My Bandit makes more power and torque, and it won't bring the front up in second in stock form. Stage 1 will get it there, though.

Wheelies take a lot more grunt at speed than off the line.

I wouldn't argue, since I haven't been riding long, but my mechanic did it two days ago on my bike. He was rather suprised as well. Again, I have heard stories about Maduras doing wheelstands at over 60 mph. The torque band is flat as it gets.

In 5th gear when I get on the gas it's a white-knuckle effort to hang on.

Safer way of checking if the rumor was true would have been to ride at 35 in second, check your tach and multiply by two to see if you were still under redline.

Yes, and no, UB. Not all gear ratios are linear. I can't speak for motorcycles, but cars often have different gear ratio increments. 70 mph is hardly a risky venture.

Madura, that's impressive. I wouldn't have guessed it. Are you sure he didn't use the clutch? I guess the numbers don't always tell the story.
