ok as most of you know i'm looking at a '86 GSXR1100 it needs windshield and the blinkers to work. and now i looked at a '88 katana 1100 that is bored out to a 1325cc. it needs rear tire, mirror, sprockets and chain, 2nd gear fork thingy(it pops out of 2nd), foot peg on the left side, and maybe a clutch cable.

the '86 GSXR1100 will cost me $1120+gas money(20-40 bucks). and the '88 katana 1100 is $1100.

which do you think i should get?
the link to more info and pics for the '86 GSXR1100 is:

thanks for your help. i need to give the katana guy an answer within an hour or 2.

Leaving the basic questions by the wayside (like do you really need an 1100'er) ...

Personally, I would go with the 86 Gixxer. A windshield and blinkers (some electrical work) will be alot cheaper than tires, mirrors, chain kit, gearbox work, footpeg, etc. I would also be hesitant to buy a bike where the engine has been bored out, since you'll have alot more maintenance and alot more worries. Unless you're planning to race the bike, I would think that the original engine would last longer than one that's been bored out.

HTH ... just my opinion ... YMMV ... yadda yadda yadda ...

oh and what i'm trying to figure out is. which bike would better suit me. and have better handleing!?! each bike has about the same performance. thats not whats selling me. the fact that there older bikes and for the money. is what is selling me. the GSXR1100 weighs around 500lbs and the katana 1100 weighs about 600lbs.

thanks

the GSXR1100 might be bored out to a 12xx cc. the seller is not sure.

plus, the seller on the GSXR1100 doesn't know the history of the bike that well. the seller of the katana 1100 knows that the prev. owner took excllent care of the bike. and it's never been down. besides stand still downs(2).

Okay, time to step back ... KAOS, how much street riding experience do you have? Are you a noobie, or have you been riding for a while and want to step up?

If you are a noobie, neither one of these bikes is highly recommended. In both cases, you are dealing with 18 to 20 year-old hardware, that will need alot of TLC to keep it happy. If you aren't good with a wrench and oily hands, wait until you find a bike that was built in the mid 90s. If you have never ridden a litre bike before, then look for a smaller used bike.

If you have to choose between these two, I would still recommend the Gixxer, since it will be cheaper for you to get road-ready, and probably have a longer overall service life.

Again, YMMV.

The Gixxer wins hands down. Unless you feel like getting intimate with the bike before you even know it, you probably don't want to be ripping into the transmission. I'd take missing plastic any day of the week.

Of course, like has been said earlier, graduating to a liter bike so quickly isn't the best idea ever. Sure it's older so it'll only have about 100hp compared to a 185hp modern ZX-10R, but 100hp on a 550lb bike is notimetoregretyourdecision fast.
