Ok, the noob is back :)

Now that I'm 21 years young (turned earlier this month), I'm a bit more serious about getting a bike (tried to stop thinking about it for a bit, thought about it again and it still seems a tangible idea).

My question, is what do you guys pay for insurance on your bikes a month? It would be helpful to know the company, bike (year too), and age of the rider ;). I ask because I've seen a junkload of different numbers, and I have no clue. Im still looking at the sv650/s and now the katana 600 (I don't really want anything slower, and those are the cheapest (i think). I won't buy new, I promise. (that is of course unless a dealership gives me a really really really good deal and the insurance diff. is negligible. then it's fair game).

Thanks in advance for all your input. Feel free to make bike suggestions as well, but my main objective is insurance prices :D

Full coverage for the bike - Bandit 600, 2001, plus $100-grand medical coverage for me = $900/year. The younger you are, the more expensive it gets, in exponential ways (it also depends on where you live and ride). Sorry for the bad news, but that's the reality.

007... I understand that It's going to be more expensive for my young, hormone filled self to be covered by insurance than it will for an old, near rotting corpse 50 yr old, but i wanted to get a range of what realistic values are. (Just kidding to all you 50 yr olds and near 50 yr olds hehehehe)

I definately plan on taking the msf course soon... not only for the discount (which i think most companies might offer), but I also don't want to look like an idiot the first time on MY bike (looking like an idiot the first time on a bike should be reserved to someone elses bike on a completely controlled environment... MSF, here I come!! :D)

And im going to guess that going non insurance would not be recommended, right? (pweez don't call me a squid for that one)

Well, try progressive, they are reasonable. Even more reasonable is www.bike-line.com.
I personally go through AAA, by far the best deal. They insure both my car and bike for less than $1,500 a year and I'm 20 in CA, an insurance nightmare.. The catch is, with AAA, you have to have a car on the plan as well. I'm actually paying less than $500 a year for the bike, and almost $1,000 for the car. I'm young and dumb and not paying much how cool is that!!!?

$498/yr with Progressive. Katana 600 '03
They have a great roadside assistance service included. I ran the battery flat, they showed up in about 45 minutes and gave me a jump.

Full coverage with Allianz Suisse for my 2003 GSX 1400 ... CHF 1'078.10 = US$890.00 per year! (I'm 40 years old, have had my cage license since 1980, motorcycle license since 2002).

For the basic coverage, I pay CHF 255 ($210) per year (I am in the lowest category, paying only 30% of the base rate).

The full coverage (which covers the full replacement cost of my bike) is CHF 768 ($635) per year (here I'm in 3rd category, paing 38% of the base rate).

The remaining $45 is taxes and other fees.

Well you should read the Dec issuse of Sport Rider. They talk insurance and how your age, bike type/brand/model, engine size, area you live in, past 3 years records, your insurance company and a few other factors effect your insurance rates.

It's useless to ask cause your rates are specific to you and you alone. Contact your car insurance company and a few others for quotes and see who gives you the best deal.

I disagree about it being useless to ask. Alot of us are listing insurance companies he may have overlooked or has never heard of. Some of us only list what we are paying as an example of how cheap it could be and probably to brag.

Well if you want a list of insurance companies to try that's one thing. However If my car insurance rate when from $64/mo to $84/mo just by moving from Melbourne to Daytona Beach (100 miles away) and then jumped up to $93/mo when I moved 50 miles south from Daytona to Orlando then I'd say asking for rates is HIGHLY subjective to all the facts that I listed above and were listed in Sport Rider magazine.

Hell even the type of coverage and deductable amount makes a huge difference in rates you pay per month. In the artical the yearly rate changed from $3645/yr to $3037/yr just by paying a $250 deductable insted of a $100 one, nothing else was changed.

But if you think it will help........

There are services on-line that offer free comparison of auto and motorcycle insurance, aren't there? (I mean, hey, we have that here in Switzerland, and we are sometimes really bass-ackwards when it comes to technology).

I have a 2001 Bandit. I have my insurance in my name, it's full coverage with medical and its almost 1,000 a yearthrough Progressive in Kentucky. If it was in my fatbers name and I was listed on it, it would be much cheaper. Plus I havent taken the MSF course.

Now . . . what's all this about insurance?
Doesn't apply to you Landry ... insurance is something that you buy with the hope that you'll never need to use it. You don't need insurance ... you are a God ... eh ... Mod.

Okay folks, here's my dirty laundry, aired for all to see.

I have a BAD driving record. I mean really bad. If I told you how many tickets I have gotten in my life, you'd think I was lying. I've been to driving school many times, and I've received the "one more ticket and we pull your license, mister" letter. Mandatory court appearances, cops that recognize the truck . . .

Heck, back when I worked for UPS, I got three tickets in an 8-week period . . . all from TN State Troopers! Hence the letter from the state . . .

When I got my bike, I called the insurance company. They told me I was virtually uninsurable at that point in my life (motorcycle-wise). When I bought the bike, I put enough down so that I wouldn't have a finance company peering over my shoulder at the insurance situation, so I never bothered getting it.

I've been driving really well lately. I haven't had a ticket since I intentionally side-wiped that jerk holding up traffic on the highway (he was riding in the passing lane . . . I ab-so-freakin-lute-ly hate that) a little over a year ago. I work for the gov't, so I can go online and see what's there. I still have some infractions that the insurance company can see.

After another year (or so), I'll contact my insurance company (the one I have my home/auto with) and tell them I own a 2002 600cc Bandit, and see what they quote me. I'm afraid that they'll do a record check as a part of the quote, and catch me . . . thus driving up my rates on the other autos also.

My riding is confined to early Sat/Sun mornings, on the curves that run up and down the Mississippi River bluffs on the Memphis side (not because of the insurance thing, that's just when/where I ride). I rarely see heavy traffic, and I'm extra careful when I do. Hopefully I won't hit anyone else if I wreck. My health insurance will cover what's left of my body, and I'll either fix or junk the bike in the event of another crash.

I know it's a bad thing, but it is what it is.

Fire away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
