Temp is 81 with 45% humidity, not a cloud in the damn sky, the wind in my hair and face just crusing around for the hell of it (no helmet and jacket today). I took the long way home from Pep Boys, like the extra 10 mile long way home cause it's just so damn pretty out. And oh yeah the streets of Orlando are alive with bikers!! Can't wait to get up to Daytona Beach later on. It's gonna be like this for the next week, man I picked the best week to go on vacation!!!!

:)

humm I guess you can edit a title on this software. Cool

All this arguing comes down to ONE thing. CHOICE. Nexus has CHOSEN not to wear gear. One day he'll wreck(not hoping you will, but, you will..) and he might have wished he had some gear one.
Most people on this site prefer to wear gear and adamantly preach to others on it benefits. Of course, there are those times when all the gear in the world won't help you but using gear gives us all that little bit of extra "insurance" on our safety.

Heres an example of making decisions on your safety.
The other day we had an incident out here where an SUV blew out a tire and rolled over. The driver was unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He suffered from a broken femur(upper leg) and was sent back to the US for further care. The passenger, who was restrained, was released from the hospital a few hours later. Due to company regualtions, the driver will most likely be fired due to not wearing his seatbelt.

Regardless of Company policy, it was his decision to not wear his seatbelt and suffered the consequences(broken leg). He was damn luck he didn't break his neck...

For what its worth Nexus,

Have fun. Be SAFE.

That is nuts. I can't drive without a seatbelt because I'm a little too aggressive on some corners and my seats dont hold you in place on your own. I can't really imagine myself driving without a seatbelt, serious, I even have it on in a parking lot or else I feel naked and exposed.

I feel right at home on a motorcycle though, that's wierd. Motorcycle seatbelts?

Flag on the post!! Ah that's gonna be a 15 yard penelty for missquoting the great American Mel Brooks classic "Blazing Saddles!" :)
You are kidding, right? That is a quote by Gold Hat in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, a Humphrey Bogart movie.

Anything else is a ripoff.

Read this again and take out the five words in the parentheses (sp?) and its a boring 4 or 5 post thread. Instead Nexus throws in the "bait" and it's a five pager. In reality if it wern't for squids, we wouldn't have such great debates that if any noob would read , would relise the benefits of gear.

Sir you are the second smartest person on this board, me being tops in that area. I nearly lost all faith in some of the members of this board but you've renewed my faith that reading comprehension isn't a lost art or skill.

:)
Hey I am new to this board and I will tell you what. I have an old bike, an old helmet and no jacket. I rode the bike twice and decided that was to stupid for someone like me. So I opted to wait until I can afford a new helemt and a jacket to ride again. Its a small price to pay. BUT being in the military, I understand about making your own choices because often times I am not allowed to. In this case I am not allowed to ride on any military installation without a helmet and a reflective vest. I wear the two anyway, but if I had the choice would I? Sure I would, but that doesn't mean that you have to. We all take our lives into our own hands every time we get on our bikes. Every turn, every gear shift and every time we squeeze that brake lever. The fact is that Nexus is a grown man and can make his own decisions. We may not like it, and we may all think hes crazy, but he has the right to be crazy if he so pleases.

I say, wear gear if you want. I would rather you did so you dont get hurt. But if you dont want to wear the gear then be damn careful. And dammit post some more about the beautiful days because here in DC the weathers miserable!

I always thought Stupidity was measured one word and one deed at a time?

So are you quilty of the words and actions or just the post?
quilty?

Well I figured he meant guilty, which I'm quite sure he did. However, I started to think about the large vocabulary usage around here. Quilty could be some fancy english talk er sumpin.

Yeah I got that too but the G and Q keys aren't even remotely close together, you don't even use the same finger to type them. How can you not proof read your posts after hitting submit??

I'm bettin it's Canadian, since he's in New York state and most likely close to that great white north border or he visits there often he must have picked up the local dialect.

Quilty, i'll try to work that into some coverstations this weekend and impress some people.
Darn good thread. Very, very interesting points!

hey hey hey i hope your not insulting the use of the word "quality" but the english!!! quality, wiked, phat, slammin, sweet, heavy, just to name a few words that all mean good

HA! I use the same finger for EVERY letter I type!
So let's get this straight, spelling errors ( btw quilty is not a Canadian word either although I've heard of kilty ) are worse than judgement errors ( no gear ) ?

I suppose if I had a quality education I would not be in a quandary as to whether I meant quilty or guilty. I will have to plead guilty of using quilty

New definition Quilty Adj. Meaning when someone has done something that is deserving of soft and comfortable reproach :D

As to proof reading before I submit... really there is not that much difference between a q and g except a little squiggle on the end

discussing fatality rates amoung riders and helmet use

According to the DOT here are their results: Click here if you want to see the Charts!!!!

Fatality rates have increased in recent years (Table 2) which implies that rate of increase in fatalities has outpaced the rate of increase in motorcycle expo*sure (VMT and registered vehicles).

Fatalities per 100 million VMT are 33.96, up from 20.99 in 1997 (61 percent increase) and per 100,000 registered vehicles 64.82, up from 55.30 in 1997 (17 percent increase).

Compared with a passenger car occupant, a motorcycle rider is 26 times more likely to die in a crash, based on vehicle miles traveled.

The following facts present some of the findings from the various analyses completed by NCSA, which explain the characteristics and magnitude of the fatal motor*cycle crash problem.

Motorcycle Helmets

In 2003, fifty two percent of fatally injured motorcycle riders were unhelmeted.

Two-thirds of unhelmeted fatalities were in states without a universal helmet law.

NHTSA research shows that, in potentially fatal crashes, helmets have an overall effectiveness of 37 percent in preventing fatalities.

In 2002, helmets saved an estimated 1,005 lives.

At 100 percent use, an additional 579 lives could have been saved in 2002 alone.

Only 58 percent of motorcyclists were observed to be wearing helmets according to the 2002 National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS).

Rider Characteristics

The largest ten-year age group of rider fatalities is the 20 to 29 year olds.

However, 46 percent are age 40 or over, a group that has grown steadily from 21 percent in 1993.

Forty percent of fatally injured operators tested positive for alcohol, and 32 percent had a BAC of 0.08 or higher.

Alcohol use was highest among operators 40 to 49 years old, followed by those 30 to 39 years old.

Of operators 40 to 49 years old, 41 percent had a BAC of 0.08 or higher.

Of operators 30 to 39 years old, 39 percent had a BAC of 0.08 or higher.

Twenty-five percent of operators involved in fatal crashes had an invalid license.

Crash Characteristics

Almost half (about 46 percent) of fatal motorcycle crashes are single vehicle.

More fatalities occur on rural than urban roads, reversing a trend that existed from 1990 through 1997.

A majority of the crashes occur on undivided roadways (70 per*cent) and roadways with median and no barriers (20 percent).

Of fatal crashes that occur at night (6:00 PM to 6:00 AM) 58 percent involve alcohol compared to only 18 percent during the day.

Of weekend fatal crashes 45 percent are alcohol related compared with 32 percent of weekday crashes.

In single vehicle crashes, 52 per*cent are alcohol related compared with 28 percent of multi-vehicle crashes.

Larger motorcycles are figuring more prominently in fatal crashes. The percentage of fatally injured riders of motorcycles with engine displacements of 1,001 to 1,500 cc has risen from about 28 percent in 1993 to about 38 percent in 2002.

Mean engine size involved in a fatal crash has steadily increased from 820 cc in 1993 to 999 cc in 2002.

Two-thirds of the riders killed on 1,001-1,500 cc engine size were 40 and over years old.
