On April 9th I'll be taking a ride, slightly longer than usual. I'll usually run 400 to 700 miles a day on the back roads of California. So before I'm to old, to slow, and to busted up to do this, I'm going to try do an "official" Iron Butt ride. The Saddle Sore 1000. It's 1000 miles in under 24 hours!

I've actually convinced a few friends to join me on this little ride around three states. It's basically the long way to Vegas with a lunch stop in the Grand Canyon! The normal direct route is about 360 miles! So I will be taking a slight detour and adding a couple miles. Here is a breakdown of Los Angeles to Las Vegas the long way, by time and trip miles.

5:00 AM Chatsworth, Ca 0 miles
7:02 Indio, Ca 156 miles
8:16 Blythe, Ca 252 miles
10:20 Wickenburg, Az 367 miles
12:03 Ash Fork, Az 478 miles
1:18 Grand Canyon Village, Az 557 miles
3:08 Ash Fork, Az 635 miles
5:19 Needles, Ca 792 miles
7:13 Baker, Ca 915 miles
8:46 Searchlight, Nv 987 miles
9:32 PM Henderson, Nv 1039 miles

Trip Time 16 Hours 32 Minutes
Saddle Time 14 Hours 7 Minutes

Should be a nice Saturday ride! Anyone else in the area want to join in?

Awesome. My buddy just got a Bandit (formerly a POS '82 Magna), so next year we'll probably try the Lake Superior SS1000.

Good luck!

BTW, I forsee you taking longer than 14:07 in the saddle. Let us know.

I have a feeling it will too. On my solo trips I set a pretty brisk pace. a few weeks back, 666 miles in 9 hours, and once, 530 miles in 5 1/2 hours! So it's possible. Just depends on the roads, traffic, and other riders....oh and the LEO activity as well.

Somehow I feel you are right and it may be a very long day!

530 in 5.5 is 96 mph avg!!! wow!

your plan is still a 71 mph avg and with a group i am sure it will be a little slower, but have a great time and go for it!

we are planning our longest one day ride so far (only been riding 3 months, not even) tomorrow. leaving tampa and going down south all the way around Lake Okeechobee and back. it is only 400 miles though. We figure leaving at 9 am and getting home around 6 with a stop for lunch and to take some pics at the lake.

people in FL arent used to it either. the safest i have ever felt was in Daytona where 75% of the vehicles were bikes.....

i had someone move over right infront of me on the way to work this morning. luckily i am always looking at as many cars as possible, and this ws one of those "her lane was long and slow and mine was faster" moments so i always am wary for someone wanting to dart out.

she wound up moving back over later and when i rode by i looked over and she looked at me and said "im sorry" so i couldnt be too mad. hopefully she remembers being sorry and looks a little harder from now on.

Humm that should cost you some where abouts $80-$90 in gas if you stick with just 87 octane!!!!!
$89.10 for Premium at $3.00 a gallon. Can you see that I expect to be gouged by the gas compies on this trip?

My suggestion would be start real early to escape from Tampa and enjoy some low volume traffic in the early part of your ride. My best rides start early. Gives a slight feeling of solitude on the open road. It also gives you some extra time to enjoy the trip, or hopefully not, deal with problems encountered along the way. Ride safe!

yup thanks! 9 am is about the earliest any of us can get going....meeting one buddy at 830, heading down to our other friends house and leaving by 9. he is south of tampa and we are heading south from there. we hardly ever encounter traffic out in the middle of the state where we are going. just 2 and 4 lanes highways with no stopsigns or lights for over half an hour sometimes.

its awesome.

I'd never even thought about an Iron Butt/Saddle Sore 'til I found this site. Now... I'm still on the fence about it. my a$$ puckers a bit just thinkin' bout it, but I'm also thinkin' I'm gonna just have to break down and do it one day.

If you are just thinking about it, you lost already. Start planning now and work out the details. You'll need the time to prep yourself your bike and your route! Good Luck!

i just mapped this all out on Streets and Trips...i thinking the needles, baker, searchlight section seems weird. you just going through searchlight, out to baker then turning around and back to searchlight then up to vegas? or are you going west on 40 and up to baker then east to searchlight?

is this just to get the miles in?

very cool route though for sure.
