OK, this might be a silly question, but I think I'm alotted a couple as a noobie, right?

Anyway, I was thinking of replacing the stock airbox & filter with the twin K&N's. Has anyone done this, and found it a worthwhile mod?

Sorry I don't have pics of my bike online yet, but probably this weekend, since I'll have all my fairings repaired & can test fit them before painting 8)

Oh, and by the way - thanx in advance for the advice!

Don't know, sorry. Our resident older Gixxer expert is taking a break but maybe someone else can pitch in.

Anytime you can get your engine to "breathe" better, it will increase power output. Most older bikes can benefit from a air filter upgrade (just as any car). Hope this helps.

Have you changed the exhaust?
Yes, I've got a Yoshimura slip-on (don't remember which model, I think it's the RS5.) Right now I've got the carbs off to rebuild & maybe even jet. That's why I was wondering if the $85 would be a good investment. I've got K&N on my '89 Mustang & '95 Corvette, so I know they work. :p

Cool, it looks like I was preaching to the choir. :D

The jetting should keep it from "popping". 8)
Tell me, though, is the "popping" just simply extra fuel in the mix, and not really harmful? Or am I way off base there? I mean my Vette pops when I get off the gas, and I think it sounds cool! I just don't wanna hurt the motor on my Gixxer if it's bad! :?

BTW, I am not the choir by any means. This engine sure isn't a Ford or Chevy! :p I'm definately learnin' as I go along 8)

That popping sound (kinda a mini backfire) is from the fuel to air ratio being too lean. Only replacing the muffler (on a bike or car) reduces the backpressure. The engine breathes out better. When you allow the engine more air in, via a performance air filter, the engine breathes in better. Now, you've got more air, but less fuel. Hence it being too lean (air/gas mixture for combustion.) Get it remapped or jet it to put more fuel when the engine needs it.

Just the basics. Tried not to be too technical.

Most likely not. You guys . . .

Use a 4 x 4 filer kit (4 individual filters). Once the bike is jetted, get it to a REPUTABLE dyno shop (one that tunes racebikes) and get it set up right. Plan on spending about $250 for that.

Food for thought: with the '88/89s, many tuners found the bikes ran BETTER when the airbox was left on. Especially w/a basically stock motor. You might want to experiment a bit with the settings. If you can sweet talk that dyno shop, try some runs with and w/o the stock airbox to see which setup makes the most power, and to see where the torque curve is.

Back to the job hunting. Suzuki is releasing this:

So, I need to keep rolling on my networking and contacts here. I want to get one of those. House is about done as well.

I was thinking of the 4X4 filters, and then found the dual K&N's. The quads are about 1/2 the price, so maybe I'll just get them both & test it all 3 ways...after all, it's only $$ Anyone wanna float me a Benjamin? :p
