Hi,

I have a 1994 Intruder 1400. It has Cobra straight pipes and jets which were put on by last owner. It sounds great and pull very strong and gets about 45 mpg.

But it pops or backfires a lot. Not sure which Pops or backfires: What is the difference? How can you tell by the sound?
This happens mostly as I slow down. In top gear (4th), it happens a lot when I slow form high speeds (70 mph) but will do it at other times too.

Not sure if this is normal for a bike with these mods. It does sound like are a Harley. 8)

The other thing is the shifting. It is very loud. Just seams like it might be hurting some cogs. It is more so into 2nd and 1st from higher mphs. I am not engaging the clutch, just shifting to find what gear I am in.

Oh, 1 more question...
The rear shocks needs to be adjusted. The last owner must have them on very stiff. It is very hard over bumps and jars my jaw!
Which direction do I twist the adjusters on the shocks?
Do the twist in different directions? Left and right shocks?
How many levels of adjustments are there?

Thanks everyone in advance... :D :D :D

i'm just gonna attack the backfiring. with the mods the previous owner put on, you're running rich. sooo, what you need to do is get your EFI adjusted to the new mods. so either find an existing fuel map and take it to the dealer and tell them to adjust it for you, or pay for a dyno fuel mapping and get it custom adjusted. the choice is yours. good luck.

i'm gonna take a few guesses at the other problems, maybe when your shifting, your at a higher rpm ( b/c your just checking for the correct gear) which doesnt give the synchros enough time to do their job thus making it a tough fit. so i dont think its actually doing any damage, but i'm not a tranny expert. and as for the suspension...guess and check?

No, dont listen to that nonsense. "Maps", and the abbreviation "EFI" apply to fuel injected bikes. Your bike, on the other hand is carbureated...Quite different. That popping is a result of a rich condition when decelerating. You can try leaning out your mixture screws a bit. Sometimes it helps, otherwise check that your choke is properly operating. Anyways this backfiring is not auctually harmful, its common with bikes wearing aftermarket pipes to pop a bit.

As for your trans...Intruders have an uncanny ability to magically induce air into the hydraulic systems, specifically the handlebar mounted masters. The extreme angle might have something to do with it. A hydraulic clutch with some air in the lines can have symptoms like hard shifting and an elusive neutral.

OK, My buddy and I will look at the carbs and see if it is lean. The exhaust pipes are of a yellow color.

We will also take a look at the hydraulics and see if there is any air.

Thanks,

Anyone know about the shocks?

Clarify this. You are pulling in the lever, but it is still hard to shift?

Hey Nut,

Yes. I squeeze the clutch lever and hold it. Then shift through the gears t(up or down) to find the right gear. My bike only has 4 gears.

What you think?

Change the oil, preferably to synthetic for the shifting and are you using high octane gas ? Is so switch back to regular and the backfires will go away.

I just had the oil changed (less than 500 miles ago), but I think the oil is a heavier grade than normal. It was suggested by my buddy, who works on sprot bikes.

No, I do not use premium gas for my bike. No need. It will not see any improvements with extra $ spent. My BMW gets the best gas!
