Today while on Rocky Road I learned that the max speed you should do on a naked bike is approx 120mph* otherwise the wind shear will rip you right off the bike. Thank god I work out and have strong arms or I wouldn't have been able to hold on at all.

:)

*Do not attempt at home. I am a professional rider and this was a close course.

Doesn't the wind hurt being naked at 120?

I had my Nighthawk up to 115 once. It wasn't pleasant.

At 176 you don't dare untuck or get above your wind screen. Your butt also gets a firm grip on the vinyl seat! I didn't know it could do that!

Well I'll never get my lil 650 chugging that fast but the ride leader was on a RC51 and there were 4 R1s and a FZ1 also in the mix that just dissapeared over the hill and next turn while I had my thighs clamped on my gas tank so hard I can still feel it in my inner thighs right now.

I think I should get a Suzanne Summers Thigh Master and start working my inner thighs before the next Rocky Road run. Hey it could help!!

i've had my bandit 600 (nekkid bike) up to 135, and that was the MAX it would go, it MIGHT have saw 140 if i was going down hill and the wind was blowing in my direction... but it was still steady at 135

ive had the CBR to 140. i was only in 4th gear at the time, and wasnt even pushing it... i had TWO more gears to go :)

I had my Kat up to 120 indicated on an open country road before I felt I needed more openness. It's scary how much more road you need in the triple digits. And I would never break the tuck or stick out a knee. I only weigh 145 lbs.

Question: Are we all talking indicated(i)? or actual(a)?

Just wondering.

A fool once took my Bandit 600 to 140i, 125a. He was . . . ahh . . . on the interstate in MS.
the indicated speed should be the actual speed on most bikes unless you changed the front sprocket right?

and in that case, how would you know the actual speed? unless you had someone else riding with you of course who told you the speed they were riding at...

i'm assuming this is what you are talking about right?

I've taken my bike up to 220kmh indicated, probably about 210kmh actual. I haven't yet picked up the navigation computer, so I can't measure actual speeds at the moment.

And as I have posted before, I'm probably the only person who can admit to doing these speeds LEGALLY on the German Autobahn between Basel and Efringen-Kirchen, where there is no speed limit.

At the moment, there is a 7km long contstruction zone starting at Efringen-Kirchen, and the entire stretch is now restricted to 60kmh (about 40mph). When I get off the Autobahn, the parallel road is actually faster, with speed limits between 70 and 100kmh.

For some reason <cough-squids-cough> the Japanese engineers saw fit to make us think our bikes are going faster than they actually are.

Mine was off by 10% (i.e. showed 70 when I was doing 63), but I've since changed moy rear sprocket (back to the original 47-toother), and I havenm't verified it with my GPS yet to see how far off it is now. Most likely, even more than when I had my 48-toother on there (I believe).

I first learned of this disturbing trend on a forum board. Checked against my brand new Accord and  :!: Checked against my GPS and found they were both wrong!

To my knowledge, most cars show your speed 2 mph over what you are really going. This is to compensate for the tendency to hover 5 mph over the speedlimit or so I've heard. My brothers Ford Focus has a "Test" mode that digitally displays your speed without that compensation. Assuming my brother's car shows road speed accurately, then my bike spedometer is accurate-- yet also has that 2 mph compensation measure. We tested it different speeds up to 80 mph with no discrepency.

Other's report that they get a % difference between actual speed and indicated. So unless you do what I did, or get a gps, no one can tell you if your bike spedo is right or not.

I found my bike speedo was off by approx. 10% by using one of those roadside radar "Speed Limit is XX, Your Speed: XX" thingys and going by at several different speeds. So my top speed actual was 108. Doesn't sound as impressive as it felt.

No. Auto manufacturers are not participating in a conspiracy to make you drive slower.

My experience with a GPS is that nearly all modern cars are dead on. Suzuki bikes, however, are usually 8-10% over (proportional, not linearly). My Bandit is at the 8% mark. Drives me nuts to not know my accurate speed without a GPS display, but I won't spend a C-note for a YellowBox.
