I started riding a 1980 XS 1100 yamaha and then a 700 nighthawk and a 95 GSX katana 750 and now I have a 89 GS 500 and feel like I need more power....

Anyone got any ideas? I ordered a stage 1/3 jet kit already (haven't installed yet). Is there anything in particular I need to do in sequences to have the jet kit be most affective? Thanks for the HELP...

so far...

so far I have ordered a one tooth bigger front sprocket and a new rear sprocket and a chain. thanks to the other posts on this website I have gathered enough information I think to get the neccesary power that I want. thank you!

well...

well that teaches me to listen the guys at the bike shop... They told me getting a bigger sprocket for the front is like adding three to the back. is there any truth in that? Well I already ordered the new one so I guess I am only out 11 bucks o well.

Its very much the same as the gearing system on a 12 speed racing bike or mountain bike. If you are on the small sprocket in front and large at the back, you pedal your butt off but don't go very far. This is typical with the lower gears on the bike. The lower gears are usually the larger type sprocket (more useful when riding up an incline) and top end gears from 4th up to 6th are smaller than the lower to give you a greater top end speed. If you go to the big sprocket in front and small at the back, two or three turns of the pedals on the bicycle get you moving pretty fast. A smaller rear sprocket should give you a slightly greater top end speed without too much strain in engine power.
