We had an amazing wreck last night. A motorcycle cop was looking around when a car turned in front of him to go the same direction he was going. He ran right into the back of it at 45 mph! He goes flying through his cruiser's windshield into the back of this car. He hit head first on the rear windshield and shattered it. The cop then slid down the back of the car onto the road. He was wearing his uniform, boots, bullet proof vest, helmet, gloves, and his gun belt. Amazingly, he only had scratches on his elbows. Internally was another story. He had a broken hip and left femur (thigh bone). I can't remember the last time I've seen cops respond to a scene so fast. I'm glad I'm just an old fireman. I've gotta lot of respect for these cops who are always out looking for the bad guys. (Except when they're giving tickets, hehehe.) My question is this: Do you think he could have avoided this wreck even if he was paying better attention?

Maybe, but then again, his job is to keep his eyes open for what's going on around him on the streets, looking for suspicious people hanging around a convienence store or ATM, and so on. I'm sure if he was out just riding for pleasure, he would have been paying more attention to the traffic.

Hope he gets back on his bike soon - it's a shame whenever a biker goes down, regardless if they are a police officer or not.

B/C of what Inspiron said. He noticed some suspicious guys hanging out next to the Chinese takeout place. The cage driver whipped out in front of him claiming she didn't see him approaching. He had a partner who was riding about 20 meters behind him.

This sounds like the car cut the cop off. But if the cop was paying attention he probably could have avoided the accident, right?

Either way, I bet the driver said, "Oh ****" as he saw a police officer sliding off the back of his car.

To tell the truth, it doesn't matter if the cop was "paying attention" or not. If you've ever had somebody pull out in front of you, there's only time for one reaction, and it better be the right one. I had my first real close call two nights ago. I was going the speed limit, 40mph, when all of a sudden this idiot lady cager does a u-turn right in front of me! I was going through a green light, she had a no u-turn sign. Didn't stop her at all. My first reaction was the only one I had time for. In about 1/4 second, I processed the fact that she was going to swing wide, so, instead of going to the outside lanes, I swerved left, towards the island. (This was a six lane road with an island in the middle...) If I had swerved to the right, when she overswung her car in the u-turn I would have hit her. I didn't have enough room to brake. So, knee-jerk reactions are dangerous. If I hadn't noticed that she was going to swing wide, I would have been hurt bad. If she had seen me at the last moment and slammed on the brakes, I would have been hurt. There's only time for one reaction in a situation like that, and given the fact that it happens so freakin' fast, often times it's not the correct reaction. So, to get back on topic with this, the cop did what he could, of that I'm sure. You don't get into a situation like that and just accept the fact that you might die; you react to avoid the situation if possible. I'm glad he's okay. And if he'd been "paying attention" to the road, he wouldn't be doing his job of looking out for the public good. Cops have to keep their eyes open at all times for anything out of the ordinary, and I'm pretty sure that's what he was doing. Unfortunately, it just happened to be at the wrong time.

Sorry for the long post...

Cops need to pay attention to a lot of stuff - he probably could have avoided the accident if he'd slowed or stopped to check something out instead or riding at 45 mph looking the pther way. Cagers will behave erratically. I'll blame the cager in this one, the "I didn't see you" defense just means that the person pulled out without looking. Glad to hear the cop is OK. 8)

ANY time a motorist hits another motorist in the rear they are cited for "following too close for conditions." When you say "But she just pulled out in front of me" the police say, "It's your word against hers." I don't know of anywhere in the 49 common law jurisdictions where this is different.

I wonder if the cop got cited for following too close for conditions. And on another point, that ALWAYS aggrivated me since it should be "following too closeLY..."!!

this would be funny to see from the drivers point of view.

(based on this thread alone)

Sounds like the driver of the car entered the traffic in an unsafe manner. It doesn't matter if the light is green, how long you sat at the stop sign, how many cars have passed, oncoming traffic was speeding, etc (all this aka conditions of the road). If you enter traffic in an unsafe manner..... you are at fault. The cage driver will probably not be cited, and the local government will probably call it awash financially, but the driver will have to pay for damages to their own vehicle, I'm sure.
