Seems there is a lot of buzz going around about the Dragon's Tail up off of Hwy 129 on the North Carolina/ Tennessee State lines.

As I have stated numerous times before I rode it last Summer on the 4th of July weekend in the rain no doubt but would enjoy doing it again in MUCH better weather. It gives you that pucker feeling bad enough when it is dry,, don't need the added stress of water on the road at all.

BUT,, here's the question. How many people would be interested in actually getting together to do Dragon's Tail/ Cherohala Skyway weekend???

I know I would like to say that Memorial Day weekend would be a good weekend,, but on that route is would be insane to try it do to all the traffic.

I am thinking somewhere in the late spring or early summer would be good. One thing to keep in mind is that the Cherohala Skyway is an elevation of over 5000 feet so it will be cooler on it than the surrounding lower lying areas.

If things were planned right we could meet up in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and stay there for the evening on a Friday. Then get up early on a Saturday,, ride through the Smoky Mountain National Forest into Cherokee, North Carolina. From there ride towards Robinsville, NC and either go North on the Dragon's Tail,, or go across the Cherohala Skyway then circle back up north to the top of the Dragon's Tail.

Or scenario #2 is everyone could meet in Gatlinburg, TN Friday night,, get up early Saturday morning and head out Hwy 321 west away from Gatlinburg. Then pick up the foothills parkway and take that southwest to intersect Hwy 129. Once you get on Hwy 129 then take that south down the Dragon's Tail towards Deals Gap. Once we have rode the Dragon and finished it we could either go further west on the Cherohala or cut back south to Robinsville, then back east towards Cherokee, NC. Then if there is still daylight either head back across the Smokies to Gatlinburg for the night or stay in Cherokee.

There are numerous options depending on which direction everyone will be coming from.

If there is a interest in doing something like this I would plan on taking a Friday and possibly a Monday off (Monday depending on the amount of time for a return trip required).

If you think this is something you would like to do post a response here with available dates and maybe we can make a go of this.

I am interested. Right now I am pretty wide open, although there is a chance that I will need to spend about 3 months in JAX, FL starting mid March. But I could still take a long weekend from there, depending upon project schedule.

All I really need is a time. And somebody to ride with on the way would be nice as thats a loooonggg trip for me. I think it comes out to around 13 hours or so. not including stops. Otherwise I've been dying to get out there.

Well I think the weekends of May 6th, May 20th, or even June 3rd would be good dates. Those are weekends that are not occupied by any of the Holidays such as Mother's Day, Father's Day, or Memorial day weekend.

Or even a weekend in April might be good too. Toss it around to anyone interested.

Sean You gonna bring the J bird? I might try to do it in conjunction with visiting my wifes parents. They live in Dayton Tenn. just down the road from the Tail. Of course I'll have to trailer it up to Tenn. Have to work that out.

I am leaning towards the June 3rd weekend. I think it would be warm enough to ride light and cool enough to wear the gear. I night in Gatlinburg would be fun too. Maybe this will work out if we can get a good solid date pinned down for everyone. Talked to Kelley and he said he is game,, will have to look at his schedule also. We should be able to get Pete and Rae on board with it too.

That is a good time of year to ride through that area.

I just went to the website and there is a place that "IS" motorcycle friendly called the "Ironhorse Motorcycle Lodge and Campground". It looks like it is only about 30 minutes from the Dragon and off of Hwy 28 East of Stecoah.

This would be a great place it looks like to stay. The rates appear to be inexpensive (about $70.00 a night) and they have cheaper plans as well. I left a message with two of the places near by. Otherwise we could start looking around Gatlinburg if everyone is game for that ride.

It all depends if you want to do the Dragon in the start of the day or towards the end of the day. Some people say going North to South is the better way to do the Dragon. Of course others say South to North is better. I did the North to South last time, but I am game either way.

This will be a buttbuffer ride for sure. How is the June 3rd weekend looking?? The last weekend in May is Memorial Day weekend so this would put it the weekend after that. I know that BlackholeKelley and my brother will NOT have their kids that weekend. I am not sure if my brother will be up to riding proficiently by that point,, so he may be willing to run a chase car for us. MAYBE......

I am voting for that weekend. Have a three day weekend the weekend before,, work a couple days,, then take another three to four day weekend riding bikes on some twisties!!!!!!!

Dont forget about Suches !

That might be a good place to sleep (I mean party) the last night on the road. Also, State Highway 60 is supposed to be one of the best roads in Georgia for Motorcycles, and it leads right into suches.

Hey! Count me in! I should be able to make it down there. I'll just leave a couple days earlier and plan on a couple more riding days back. It sounds like a blast. Are there any campgrounds? Maybe I can rent a tent while I am down there. That would be a blast.

Hey! Count me in! I live in Hickory NC so it's not that far for me. 431 miles round trip from my house, to the overlook, and back. I've ridden the dragon once before making a very cold run back home. I would enjoy spending more time in that area. I just need to know at least two weeks in advance when we go so I can arrange a babysitter for my son, and schedule time off from work.

Drop me an e-mail or PM
