I crashed pretty badly on June 12. It was my fault and I was extremely lucky. I just wanted to post some things that I have had on my mind since then. I knew these already, but for some reason I ignored all but #5 that day.

1. Don't ride near the edge of your comfort zone
2. When riding in unfamiliar areas, #1 is even more important
3. When you get behind, don't try to catch up.
4. Any rush you get from the above ain't worth it.
5. WEAR YOUR HELMET! It saved my life! I took a good blow to the head during the accident and still stayed conscious

I knew damn well not to do any of the above, and I did it anyways. I'm lucky to be alive and feel blessed to only have broken bones

If you want more information on what happened, here's a link:http://www.katanaplanet.com/kp/showthread.php?t=773

thats bad. at least you were wearing your gear. what gear do you have?
here's what I was wearing:

HJC AC-11 helmet
Gericke Venom mesh jacket
Alpinestars mesh pants
Alipinestars S-MX 1 gloves
Teknic freeway touring boots.

The gear did its job. I didn't have too many cuts or bruises at all. The weakest link was probably the gloves. The boots worked out great and the helmet was flawless.

The Teknic boots were only $60.00 at www.newenough.com They're still available in the closeouts. Better MC boots are out there, but wearing a MC boot is much better than tennis shoes or work boots. It's more comfortable for riding as well. Overall, I liked the boots especially for the price.

As for helmets, get DOT and Snell and make sure it fits. Cheaper ones will protect fine but they get more comfortable (lighter, quieter) as the price goes up.

Crash in the park

I will admit I was riding outside my comfort zone. I was excited on my first overnight trip with a bunch of guys I had rode with before and I wasn't wearing my helmet so luck was truely on my side. my bike however took the beating and pretty much saved my hide from a trip to the hospital.

Great "Keep Yourself Alive" List! Although i must admit, a sprinkle of #1 and a dash of #4 sure keeps your blood thumping.............maybe trying these two things (#1 and #4) in the middle of Podunktown, Kansas would be a little safer............glad you're here to let us know............Ride Safe!
