I just bought an S40(Savage, LS650) and I absolutely love it. This bike keeps up with all bikes except crotch rockets to at least 60 if not higher. My question is on the 600 mile service what exactly should I make sure that they do. My dealership is a little shady and want to make sure it is done right. Also has anybody had a 600 mile service done on their bike and what is the result when you get it back in terms of performance and gas mileage. Does this service even affect any of those things? Also so far my gas mileage with 550 miles on the odometer has averaged 58 mpg. Will that go up after the service or n

Your MPG will go up ever so slightly as the motor breaks in over the next year or so, but not much. The 600 mile service is basically an oil and filter change, but they also check everything to make sure it was assembled properly, the bolts are torqued correctly, the chain is adjusted and lubed, the clutch is adjusted, all the fluids are at the proper levels, etc.
Your owner's manual should have a chart that shows what is done at all the services. Make sure you tell them about any minor troubles you have had, or any funny noises, etc, so they can take care of them ro it will at least be on the record for if something breaks later.
After the first service, buy an oil filter wrench and learn to do it yourself. Oil, filters, spark plugs, chain lube, chain adjustment, and the other things done at future services are easy to do yourself and you can save about 75% of the cost doing it at home. But let the dealer give the bike a once-over at 600 miles.

I agree with the good Doctor. It's a pretty good idea to take the bike to the Suzuki shop for it's first service but after that, do everything yourself. Get a Clymer's service and repair manual and begin learning how your bike works. The Savage, being a single cylinder belt driven machine, is pretty simple to operate and maintain. For future reference, I would use only Suzuki OEM oil filters and change the oil every 2500 miles. The second or third oil change, go to fully synthetic oil.

Don't they change the spark plugs on the 600mi service? They also adjust the idle speed accordingly. Nothing big.

Anyways, I don't have your bike, but I have started using K&N oil filters. Easier start ups, especially in cold weather with a cold engine. It's K&N so it probably filters oil equally as good or better than oem filters. You also won't need an oil filter attatchment because they got a 17mm nut so a regular wrench can take it on and off.

I +1 The old guy's comment about switching to synthetic after 1300+ miles. I'd go for 3000 miles to be safe though, as synthetic totally arrests the break-in process which can go on for awhile.
