Hello everyone. Ben, posting for the first time from the Common(lack of)wealth of Virginia. In the couple of days it has been since I found this forum, I have read non-stop. Tuesday, I will pick up my first motorcycle, an 04 GSXR600 (I know - I'm doomed). I have read the threads and quite honestly, you all have scared the bejesus out of me!!! I think the bike will keep my car good company in the garage and make a nice rack for the jacket and helmet that I bought. The physics of sportbikes never crossed my mind as I contemplated purchasing one, only how many warm days are left up here (just moved from GA) and how much is it going to cost. I look forward to learning more and more from your knowledge and opinions. Thanks. See you on the boards!

Just take the MSF class, buy and wear gear and go slowly at first. And remember, it's not if, but when you drop your bike.

Oh yea, I was absolutely terrified when I first started riding. I worked maximum security and later bounty hunted in the ghettos and I was never concerned for my safety like when I first started riding. But you get used to it.

That makes me sad that you're just buying yours and I (I live in NY) am just getting ready to put it away for the winter season. Be safe with that monster.

Welcome! You're already ahead of the game if you've been reading and you are scared right now. It's good to have a little bit of fear...it'll keep you in check!

I'm always a bit nervous when I get on my bike...especially when it's been a week or two since I've ridden...

your gonna have a blast, but not until about 1000 miles or so. Make sure to do that first maintenance, or get it done!!

Thanks for all the welcome and well wishes.

State: I am in Richmond.

SuzukiGirl: I have a lot of fear so how far ahead does that put me?

DaMaNP: I bet it will take forever to get 1000 mi. when sitting in parking lots at college football games.

LayinLo: Uncle Sam's Misguided Child! Now that's new. i've never heard a marine say anythign nice to me.

red7: Depends on what "that" is. In this case, NO.

Welcome ben_there. You will find that the members of this forum are extremely helpful.

I got my first bike (02 GSX-R600) three months ago. I got it on a Tuesday and sat in the garage until I took the MSF course (5 days later).
I was so new at this that I had to use the owner's manual to start the bike (':D') .
It was a big wake up call to go from the 125cc bikes from the course to the 600.
For a few seconds there, I thought I had made a mistake buying this bike. like I said, only lasted a few seconds.
I put 3000kms on it since and only one scary event to speak of......It took me a month to go over 10,000rpm. Take it easy and enjoy it,,,,,it's a great bike.

May your wrist find humility and your bike stay on the stickier side. As for being afraid, that only keep you more aware.

Welcome.
