I just bought my first bike saturday, a 94 Katana 600. I put about 80 miles on it the first day. UInfortunately it came with a problem. Second gear doesn't work right, but all the other gears work great. I can downshift to second and it works fine, but if I upshift to it and try to accelerate it drops into neutral. I'm thinkin and hopin it's the paw or the teeth on the shifter rod behind the clutch basket. I was wondering if anyone ever had a problem like this and could help me out with a suggestion of the culprit.

Thanks a bunch,

Sounds like you need a new 2nd gear at the very least. Someone has abused this bike, particularly harsh to it during 1-2 shifts. The "dogs" on second gear are now rounded off, making it easy for them to slip off each other. Shift forks and shift drums also suffer from this abuse. Its only going to get worse it left unrepaired. Get ready to spend $1200 to fix her up.
