What is the purpose of wearing a "Dew rag" with your helmet? :? I see them on guys in winter, summer, spring, and fall. What are they for? I am talking about the bandanna looking things that tie around your head.

Do they keep you from getting helmet hair, sweating, or what,,, just wondering? :?:

I guess this post shows my "Newbieness" doesn't it,, but if I don't ask then I won't know.

I dont know why most do.. but do for the sweat... I fly helicopters too... and my flying helmet reeks cause of the amount of sweat..so i started wearing one for flying and riding.. its a lot easier to wash a rag then your liner... well at least for me it is..

thats just my 2 cents though

That makes sense,, ya a Navy pilot? I was a controller for eight years,, had several friends that were controllers in Puerto Rico. I have a old helicopter smock that I use in the winter,, but was wondering if the dew rags would help the helmet hair and protect the helmet from smelling bad. I appreciate the answer. My girlfriend gave me one last night from the radio station she DJ's at. She said she thought I might like it for my bike,, didn't want to look completely stupid,, so I just said thanks.

Figured I better figure out what their purpose is. Oh by the way,, since you said you are a pilot,, AGV has a helmet out that looks like a helicopter helmet,, it's called the "Dragon" model,, comes in gloss black, matte black, and a camoflage pattern,, DOT legal and I bought one. Just waiting for it to get here.

i just read an advertisement for them (i think in JPCycles catalogue) saying "keep from getting helmet hair".

also, my friend was saying a couple months ago that he had just learned what they were for. help to keep hair in certain position till it "learns" to stay that way. so i guess it is a hair thing.

although to totally make me look stupid, i see plenty of bald people wearing them under their helmet..that must be for sweat.

Well, I don't wear one with a helmet but I sometimes do wear one to keep my bald head from getting sunburned.

I wear a full face helmet and during the summer it's easy to sweat inside your helmet so I have no doubt that it would help to soak up sweat. I may start wearing one under my helmet this summer.
