Alright guys, don't get ahead of me here......I didn't just get out of prison or anything.

BUT, I did take my first long ride of about 30 miles on the new M50 tonight and my butt-bone is SORE!! I could barely straighten up my back when I climbed off that thing. I'm going to soften up the suspension but my real reason for this post is to look for opinions on a new aftermarket seat.

Has anyone replaced theirs with something really comfortable? If so, please post because I'm going to have to find me another seat.

Thanks!

Gel is definitely better when you're gonna spend longer time spans in the saddle... but 30 minutes? Are you butt clenching that much while riding? :) Relax - it's a cruiser;-)

I have a Intruder 1500LC,,, I just purchased a new Mustang seat. Have not received it yet,, but I am looking for it anyday now. I found it at Metric Thunder for almost $75.00 cheaper than Mustang, JP Cycles, and several others. Their phone number is 1-866-744-7900,,,, they are in California. I bought the one with a back rest,, trying to make my Lazy Boy on wheels even more like a Lazy Boy!!!!

Now the Mustang seat is costly,, but I also spent a good chunk of change buying a bike,, I would rather spend some more to be able to ride it alot and enjoy it rather than pay for something that I don't want to ride for long.

Call them and see what they have to offer,,, maybe one of the older seats form the '04 models will fit,,not sure maybe Pinhy or one of the M50 boys might know.

Thanks for the suggestions. Mustang doesn't show one for the M50 on their website but I emailed them to see if anything was available.

In reading around the internet, I've found that there seems to be a lot of people complaining about the seat on the M50. I may just try to find a gel cover for it to use for a while until somebody like Mustang makes one for it.

Hi Dragula, When I bought my Marauder new last year I found I too was getting pretty sore after a long ride, but as time went on it wasnt as bad, and so far this year I havent noticed any "butt pain" at all yet, I guess I'm wondering if these seats "break in" after a while?

+1000!! Man ive done rides of over 100 miles almost every weekend, and did a 8 hour 410 mile ride too. I have no problems with the seat. It is more comfortable than the Honda VTX has on it and my friend on his rides right there with me and doesnt complain too much. 30 miles?!?! You must be riding way too tense.

I think the M50 seat is pretty good. I am sure there is better out there, but i have no complaints. Note: I am 6'1" and 145 pounds...so needless to say i have a very skinny, unpadded a$$! haha

let us all know what you find out about gel/mustang..etc.

i am looking forward to the M50 aftermarket catching up for sure.

Hey Pin, I've got an additional 100lbs over you so my back is under a little more strain than yours.

What I've been reading on some other forums is that apparently there is a bolt located under the seatpan that as the seat flattens out from somebody's big butt that your tailbone starts to feel the protrusion after a while. That combined with the stiff suspension make it a little rough on us "big guys".
My Vstar rode very comfortable with the stock seat over hundreds of miles.
I'm not knocking the M50.....I'm thrilled overall with the bike, I just need a more comfortable seat.

Here's some interesting reading concerning the stock seat on cruisers inc. the M50:

i do agree that the bracket coming out of the seat to hook the back seat to can be felt in my tailbone area if i scoot way back (whcih i do a lot since the controls are not that far forward). I am thinking that if i / you guys got forward controls, you could scott forward a little in the seat and not hit that as much (if that is the one you are talking about).

edit: i read the article and i see that is the bracket you are talking about. probably since i am so skinny i dont push back into that as much and when i do i just scoot a little forward to be comfy.

i'll look inot aftermarket seats when mine starts to get worn or i wind up cutting it with something accidentally.

I think some of you have to go read Gixxerdales post about his 1000 mile ride...on a GSXR!!!!!!

He's my long ride hero! :bows:

 Thanks ReGina!

For some reason my bony old butt never gets sore, but Gixxer seats are pretty plush and comfy right from the factory!

Well, I took a little 10 mile trip tonight and my tailbone is still sore. This time though, after reading about it on the internet, I could tell that there was something protruding through the seat and hitting directly on my tailbone. I could slide forward but then it was just an uncomfortable riding position.

When I got home, I pulled off the seat and checked it out and it was clearly the way that the seatpan is formed. It protrudes up into the foam right at the top center at the rear of the seat.....right where my tailbone is at.

I'm going to try to find a piece of firm foam and pull the seat cover off enough to be able to put the piece of foam over the protrusion. Hopefully, that will be enough to fix the problem. If not, I have a couple of other ideas to modify the seatpan that I may try. I've got to do something....I can't keep riding it like this.

Is there a clearance problem and that is why the pan is that way? Sounds like a big design flaw. Or do they not have tailbones in Japan?

In my mind, this is clearly a design flaw. I hate to bash my new bike here but it seems to me like any semi-competent engineer would notice that if the entire seat is covered with about 3" of foam except for this one piece of plastic that it is going to poke right into the back of anyone who rides far back in the seat.

Here's my disclaimer: Other than the seat problem, I absolutely LOVE the bike. It runs, performs, drives and sounds PERFECT! I know that a lot of people come to these forums, as I did, just to research about a bike before purchasing one and my advice when it comes to the M50 is to just sit on the bike first and see if it feels like the seat may hit your tailbone as it does mine. If you have no problem with that or you plan to buy an aftermarket seat, then BUY this motorcycle!! You won't be disappointed!

Also, my guess is that the japanese probably don't have a lot of 6' 240lb butts sitting on their bikes over there.

I'll take some pics tomorrow to show others what the problem is so they'll know what to look for.

Jeez, Pinhy.. I thought I was skinny. You've got a few inches of height on me, but I've got about 10 lbs weight on you. ;-)

Drag.. dude, I'm wondering if you got a bad seat from the factory. That just doesn't sound right. Pinhy, have you checked to see if yours has the same flaw?
